Northern California Contemporary Landscape Oil Paintings

Seven new landscape oil paintings of northern California by Canadian Contemporary artist Terrill Welch become available for purchase today. Using her plein air and photography sketches as well as her memory, these works are inspired from Terrill’s slow travel down and up the coast this spring.

The dynamic movement of the sea, sky and light at Arena Lighthouse in northern California mesmerizes and inspires.

Knowing what is coming and yet unable to decide whether to stay or to move forward or back from the surf as it builds its strength before coming ashore again. This is the first of three related northern California surf paintings.

A vibration followed by the hard pressure of full impact. We know that the sea will wear at the stone repeatedly until it gives but in this moment of connecting we are fooled.

There is a full-exhale as the surf releases all that it holds before gathering itself to return again. Moisture appears in small droplets on our bare skin. Only then is there an audible sigh. This is the third of three related paintings of the northern California surf.

The scent in the air changes rapidly as the warm light and cool shadows are rearranged overhead. New leaves and blades of grass unfold and push forward. Knowingly or unknowingly we recognize this ordinary spring day with rolling thunderclouds.

Big fat fluffy clouds move swiftly across the early spring brilliant green of the Fremont Hills. The dark drama mirrored in the quarry lakes. A brief burst of rain did not reach the landscape until early evening.

The haze and atmosphere are warm and rich – almost buttery, even in early spring. There is a constant taste of chalk with a hint of salt on the air in this drought-ridden geography. It is a private view for the viewer alone to savour. The road denotes a connection to civilization that does not intrude on the landscape.

Summer Release of an Eclectic Group of Seven Oil Paintings

Summer sun is having a long heated love affair with the southwest coast of Canada this year. It makes for some cautious lazy days as one is vigilant about fire hazards and water conservation. But the studio is cool right up until late afternoon. New work is completed and a few older pieces revisited. Decisions are made and gradually a body of new paintings is ready for release. They are varied and without a common link other than the artist’s brush marks. If connections between works is what you seek, come on back next week when the California paintings from my travels earlier in the year will be released. For now, lets skip and dance through a studio rendering of random pieces…..

November light lingers as it crosses the full depth of the room. Paintings are in temporary positions. Most paintings in the studio are accustomed to these circumstances as they appear and disappear out into the world. This painting thought it might be kept. Seven months it remained hopeful.

The dishes lost form and function as they clatter to the floor of the painter’s doubt only to rise again in her imaginations. Dishes are never really done.

Brushes move quickly over the plein air canvas in the cool shade of a warm spring afternoon. Maybe we can just sit and read a while and enjoy our tea.

In addition two Terrill Welch landscape paintings have been accepted in the 29th Sooke Fine Arts Show July 24 to August 3, 2015. This is the largest juried event in the region, representing Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands artists. The competition is fierce and jury selection rigorous. I am honour to be included. There are 375 pieces selected and the event attracts more than 8000 visitors, tourists and art patrons throughout its 11-day run. I am thrilled to have these two works represented this year and I’m looking forward to the show. If you are in the neighbourhood during this time, I highly recommend going to this premiere event. There will be some outstanding work to satisfy the artistic appreciation in everyone. Just let me know if you need more of the details.
