New Gallery Pod for the Win

Finding homes for paintings is a pleasurable task anytime. However, finding homes using the best tools available is even more enjoyable. There are a few advantages to collecting art directly from an independent artist for art collectors. I usually have most of the available inventory readily accessible and not in one of five or so different galleries that you will then need to contact directly. I can easily pull together a private viewing room for a specific size or subject request for online detailed viewing. I have the independent gallery space to bring that online private viewing room selection into a physical gallery space for viewing those paintings on very short notice. And this is what came about yesterday.


A request to view specific works in a size range for a specific subject came in via email first thing yesterday morning. I replied with the offer to create a private viewing room of available paintings that met their requirements and have them hanging in the gallery pod for final decision by 1:00 pm. The art collector thought this would work well. They came by at 3:30 pm, made their decisions easily as they had already reviewed the work online before coming. I packaged up the two paintings they chose and sent them on their way with an invoice to follow via email at 5:00 pm. An online payment was received just before 6:00 pm. We did it! All done and a very happy art collector. 

In between, I still did my social media posts and put up a new blog post.


It is on days like this when I can turn on a dime to satisfy the requests of art collectors that I am so thankful to be an independent artist with a great online gallery show space and inventory/invoicing tools with Artwork Archive and my very own gallery show space at our front gate. These two online and in-person art gallery spaces work amazingly well and seamlessly together. Here are the two paintings that are now off into a new home of their own…

SOLD – The Woodcutter’s Stash by Terrill Welch 16 x 12 inch acrylic on gessobord.

Artist notes: Starting from plein air, I work on this painting for several time over an eight month period until it finally felt complete and the harmony between the woodcutter’s stash and the landscape itself held just the right amount of familiarity and tension. The driftwood had accumulated because of heavy winter storms,and flooding from atmospheric rivers the previous November. The type and intensity of storms were cause by changes in our climate. The woodcutter was able to selvage the aftermath and put it to good use. A very thin silver lining in otherwise disastrous circumstances.

SOLD – An Early Spring Sea by Terrill Welch 8 x 10 inch acrylic on gessobord

Artist notes: The weather was unstable with about an hour from start to finish between showers. Yet, the sea was steady and true, in a chameleon sort of fashion, as the tide receded. A good afternoon for being a plein air painter.

Mostly The Red Line Series

New show in the Terrill Welch Gallery Pod opening today October 6 and showing through to October 31, 2022. Self browsing available in person from 11-4, Thursday through Monday, at 428 Luff Rd., Mayne Island B.C. or online in our private viewing room HERE.

This show is primarily Terrill Welch’s Red Line Series which began in 2021 as a way for her to be personably accountable for noticing the impacts on our environment while holding the tension between the grandness and beauty during the destruction of our landscape.

Artist notes about the Red Line Series: Sea levels rise, damage from storm surges increase, wild fire smoke gives us deep orange moonrises, glaciers in the mountains melt endangering our freshwater supply and we are running out of suitable sand to make cement as we mine the landscape relentlessly for its resources. I could paint stunning landscapes for the next twenty years. But, in a way, they would be a lie, denying the pain and lump in my throat as I walk amongst the trees. Right now, painting only such paintings of bliss seem irresponsible, an unacceptable personal denial. So I went to work to find a more honest way to render my experiences.

Smaller paintings by Terrill Welch are also included outside of this series plus two guest paintings by Jennifer Peers.

A Weekend Gallery Get Away Visit

Self browsing is available in our well ventilated Terrill Welch Gallery Pod and it is open today between 11-4 and each day through to Monday at 428 Luff Rd on Mayne Island, BC and day trips are pleasant adventures from Southern Vancouver Island to Mayne Island. Or with reservations, come to the island from anywhere for a few days during the golden days of September.

Our location is marked on Google maps and on the Mayne Island Chamber map that is a available on BC Ferries and at various location on the island.

Seven Savvy Reasons to Purchase a Terrill Welch Painting Right Now

For every purchase, online or in person, of an original Terrill Welch painting during the opening days of Gallery Pod between September 1st and 6th there is a possible savings [NO LONGER AVAILABLE] on your purchase. The amount of your saving will be disclosed on your invoice and has been determined by chance. If you are already a collector of Terrill Welch Gallery paintings, then your art collector savings still applies in addition to our opening savings.

Seven Savvy (and slightly cheeky) Reasons For Purchasing During Our Opening Savings

One – Our home needs a (or another) Terrill Welch painting on that wall. (Of course it does!)

New Mayne Island Gallery in the Woods

Once upon a time there was a Canadian contemporary landscape painter, Terrill Welch, who needed to create a new gallery space on small rural Mayne Island on the southwest coast of Canada, right in the middle of everywhere. She thought and thought and considered and then considered some more. It was the end of October 2021. The commercial space that she had rented since the summer of 2017 in Miners Bay was closing and she needed to secure a new show space for her paintings and those of the other artists she is showing with the gallery. What could she do? Commercial space was extremely limited. In a swish of inspiration during a sleepless night, she had an idea. Terrill thought “what if I was to use a small container designed for this specific purpose and placed it at the our front gate?” 

Following a faint trail of internet crumbs, she found the website of West Coast Container Homes. They were making “Office Pods” close by on Vancouver Island. One look at these and it wasn’t even a stretch to imagining a Gallery Pod. So, after a couple of design conversations with founder Adam Benning, followed by a few weeks of a special offer of paintings to the gallery’s generous art collectors, the funding was secured for this new adventure and it was scheduled for creation. With supply chains being what they are, we did have a wee bit of a delay. However, our new Gallery Pod arrived mid August 2022 and is sporting its first show. Come have a look!

Then larger paintings farther along. All of these paintings are by Terrill Welch, except the guest painting on the left in this image which is the work of fellow painter Jody Waldie.

The painting on the far wall is of a view at Trafalgar Park lookout along King George Terrace in Victoria, British Columbia. We decided it was the perfect summer painting to open the first show.

Of course, no Mayne Island inspired landscape painter would open a new gallery space without offering paintings of arbutus trees and the Salish Sea.

There it is! Our first show in our new Terrill Welch Gallery Pod is ready for your visit!

Feel free to take a candy from the mug, sign the guest book, leave your email address if you wish to receive our newsletter and take a business card to further explore our paintings online at your leisure.

The official opening is 11-4 Thursday, September 1st through Tuesday September 6th, when we will have both the Gallery Pod and the Home Studio open for walk in visitors. After the special opening days, the Gallery Pod will be open during the fall shoulder season for walk-in 11-4, Thursday through Monday or by arrangement on other days. The Home Studio will remain open by advanced arrangement or impromptu visits if it is possible. However, if you are in the neighbourhood between now and the official opening days, it is possible to visit the Gallery Pod immediately. We will turn the lights on and put the “OPEN” sign out from 11-4 each day. 

The road signs will be put up soon as well. There are directions on our website with a map for finding your way to the Gallery Pod and Home Studio at 428 Luff Rd, Mayne Island HERE. This map also shows where to find our other Terrill Welch Gallery adventure – the ISLAND TIME ART room located at 492 Dalton Dr. in the Dragonfly that is in the blue building above the ferry terminal in Village Bay. ISLAND TIME ART offers smaller original paintings and usable art such as totes, aprons, greeting cards, coasters, zipper pouches and more. Between the two locations we can offer great options to consider for your art collection and gift giving needs. 

We are totally thrilled with the outcome and so are our first gallery visitors. You will have to come see for yourself or we can do a video or FaceTime visit for you. It will be fun. Browsing is encouraged.

Additions to the Red Line Series and more

In an ambitious effort to get more of Terrill Welch’s work available to art collectors and fans during our special Gallery Pod opening offer, we have released two more paintings and two painting studies. Three of these works are in Terrill’s developing Red Line Series about the impacts of climate change on our much loved landscapes. Let’s start with the latest of these paintings first…

Artist notes: Emerald Lake is a compelling mountain location with a stunning lake below. This work started with a plein air study just as the ice was breaking up. The broken part of the red line is to leave a little bit of hope in our ability to change our behaviour in the face of the consequences from environmental impacts.

Next up is a small study following major atmospheric river flooding on the west coast of British Columbia last November.

Artist notes: I started from an intuitive place with no plan or sketch, just a haunting idea that comes following the recent flooding in British Columbia and the amount of debris that ended up on our Mayne Island shores. I have a very old night terror of being in a car that slides off the road over a steep bank into the Fraser River on the way to town where we lived and then starts to fill with murky water. My earliest memory of this nightmare are about the age of five and it repeated itself every few months with further embellishments right up until sometime in my mid thirties when in my dream state I somehow figured out how to get out of the sinking car and float to the surface. Then the nightmare never came back except as a waking memory now and again and when watching and reading about the flood mudslide victims.

Then there is this small study on paper in gouache…

Artist notes: The waves and sea move towards the shore with no visible evidence of their hidden challenges. I did this in gouache as a study on paper and it is unframed.

There are two more Red Line paintings just about ready for release and we anticipate these to be out within the next few of weeks in anticipation of the second group of featured works in our new Gallery Pod.

For the final release this week, we have what is primarily a memory that is revisited every year or so when Terrill goes home to spend time with her parents living on a farm outside of Vanderhoof. This is a landscape of her childhood and the first that she drew and then started painting in oils when she was just fourteen years old.

Artist notes: The early morning mist filtering sunlight through the willows, poplars and cotton woods beside the Stuart River is a magical time of day and filled with years of memories.

We Have Moved!

Yes, we have physically moved and will be in two unique locations going forward.

The First Location Is Now Open! Wednesday through Monday 10-5 and closed on Tuesday.

Today we offer you Terrill Welch’s favourite Top Ten of 2021 paintings for your viewing pleasure. Many of these works are already in private collections. Terrill Welch released 29 paintings in 2021 and 44 original works from her inventory were sold along with many reproductions. She knew this day would come but she anticipated that it would have been about five more years in the future. Fortunately, we have a healthy inventory of her work available and now represent the work of other artists that are her past students. In this way, we can keep providing the paintings that you love to add to your art collections and for viewing and sharing with others. For now though, in no particular order, are Terrill’s personal favourite paintings that were completed in 2021.
