British Columbia artist Terrill Welch’s quick sure painting strokes capture forest, sandstone, sea and sky.  They remind us that there is only one moment – this one.

Since January 2010, hundreds of Terrill Welch original paintings of various sizes found their way into private collections. Many of these paintings have sold while still work-in-progress or resting wet on the easel. The best way to determine which paintings are currently available is to browse her online Artworks Archive Gallery. Please note, if you find a work of interest, do not hesitate. To avoid disappointment, send an inquiry to have a desired work placed on a hold or make a request to purchase immediately. We like to avoid seeing sad faces in favour of witnessing smiling, excited art collectors.

Born in the village of Vanderhoof in north-central British Columbia, Terrill’s art training came at an early age and continued more in the European style of mentoring and tutoring.

Terrill Welch’s oil paintings frequently showcase the beautiful, mysterious and rugged southwest coast around her home on Mayne Island B.C. as well as paintings from her travels.

Though locally appreciated, Terrill Welch is internationally recognized.  Her paintings and photographs are sold to art collectors throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Australia, England, Norway and Switzerland. Terrill Welch is named as one of 21 Artists to watch for 2011 by Skinny Artist in its world-wide review.

Terrill Welch’s work is in collections that also include such renown Canadian landscape painters as Emily Carr, A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris.

Group show “Soft Belly of the West Coast | Winter Group Show” October 8 – March 6, 2022.

Early mornings are filled with mist in the half-light of sunrises or rolling seas pressed against pewter grey skies. Golden hour lengthens our stride beneath curving arbutus, tall fir and cedar trees as we listen to the echoing calls of a raven winging its way through their branches. This is the soft belly of the West Coast that captures the attention of Mayne Island landscape painters Jody Waldie, Glenda King, Jennifer Peers and Terrill Welch. Sometimes it is a sunrise, or a favourite beach or the peeling bark of the Arbutus. Sometimes it is the golden hour at the end of a day or a grand vista from a lookout. Whatever the subject that is whispering to these painters brushes, you will be glad you settled in for a while and enjoyed the view or puzzled over a red line representing the stresses that are changing our landscapes.

Solo exhibition “Arbutus Trees and Life Itself | Terrill Welch” August 9 – October 31, 2021.

Terrill Welch’s passion for the landscape and our natural environments, particularly the arbutus trees and the sea of our southwest coast of Canada. Arbutus Trees (or Madrona Trees as they are called in the United States) are frequent subjects in her body of work both as small en plein air (in the open air) painting sketches and larger studio works.

On our bellies leaning over a dock in Horton Bay, bracing against the winds in a storm to capture large rollers coming ashore or lengthening our stride along a forested seaside trail are all part of life on Mayne Island next to the Salish Sea. Solo exhibition “Stepping Lightly: pandemic life within our landscape” June 9 – August 29, 2021.

An essential rush of early dawn drapes over the curves of an Arbutus tree along the Mayne Island shore. Waves roll up and separate into cascading jewels. Seagulls rest in a moment of quiet communion. Dreams and memories meld into imagined and remembered places. This has been an unprecedented year for sure. But what does this mean for landscape painter Terrill Welch? As we linger with her recent works, we can sense the need to step lightly, to pause and softly brush a branch aside for a clearer view. Nature has spoken. All our thrashing and inward self-absorption can easily be set aside. We shall mature away from our financial means. We shall because this is what happens in the wholeness of life. Grief and hope lay in universal overlapping brushstrokes of trees and the sea and the shore.

Through her paintings in this solo exhibition, Terrill Welch invites us to stand with her during this unique space and time, together. We shall open up in ways that we have never thought mattered, by design, filled with purpose, rising towards possibility. Do you dare?

Solo exhibition “From Away with Terrill Welch” March 3 – June 6, 2021.

Landscape painters, like the rest of us, yearn to freely travel again. There is something about discovering a new stream, stretch of beach or an alley in a centuries old city that will always easily spark inspiration. Right now, these adventures are on hold, even though the desire to explore is stronger than ever. To appease this driving urge, we are bringing you a collection of Terrill Welch’s paintings from away. These places stay strong in her memory through these landscape paintings and we want to share them with you. The places landscape painter Terrill Welch longs to visit again and again as we stay in place. Let’s go to Venice, Italy, Avignon and Aix en Provence in France. Two artists show “Between Branches – our being with trees” November 21, 2020 – April 21, 2021.

This is a shared story about being with trees between two landscape painters located in two different areas of British Columbia, Canada. From the geographical centre and the southwest coast of this diverse province, we will discover where the work and stories of these two painters meet and where they diverge from within their own unique forests and experiences. The Terrill Welch Gallery offers a joint online show of Annerose Georgeson and Terrill Welch’s landscape paintings and more importantly, a chance for a conversation between these two Canadian artists.

Solo exhibition “Travel Within” October 21, 2020 – February 21, 2021.

Stepping out into nature and traversing across the landscape offers a bridge between our outer and inner world for landscape painter Terrill Welch. Her brushstrokes render movement and experience as a first impression in these seascape and landscape paintings, whether it is winter storms or a quiet slack tide.

Group show “CLOSE TO HOME – Arbutus Room Group Show” October 7, 2020 – February 7, 2021. 

The pandemic has kept most of us close to home during these past months and this reality has brought many changes to our daily lives and expectations. Artists Jody Waldie, Jennifer Peers, Glenda King and Terrill Welch bring their most recent “Close to Home” oil landscape paintings from Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada to the Terrill Welch Gallery’s Arbutus Room. Several of these west coast landscape paintings began while plein air painting and physical distancing together during this past spring and summer. The fall has meant going back to even smaller groups and mostly painting alone on private properties as the artists comply with changes to provincial and local requests to flatten the curve and keep our community and themselves safe. These recent paintings are about persistence and resilience. They are about a quiet coming together while maintaining safe distances and finding possibilities within limitations. May you find inspiration from these renderings of open spaces close to the homes of these artists.

June 2011 –  Oceanwood Resort, Mayne Island B. C. Canada. STUDY OF BLUE. The solo exhibition of Terrill Welch’s impressionist style oil paintings provoke introspection as they capture the sea, the sky and the trees of the west coast of Canada. Eleven of the Fifteen original paintings in this show sold to collectors as far away as Illinois in the United States.

September 2010 – Mayne Island Library, Mayne Island B.C. Canada. SEA, LAND AND TIME. Terrill Welch’s oil paintings and photography have been described as impressionist, intuitive and attuned to the essence or resonance of her subject. Collectors arrived from Victoria and Vancouver to purchase paintings and photographs  in the first solo exhibition in twelve years of Terrill’s work. One painting purchased by a new art collector in New York City.

July 1998 – One-Of-A-Kind-Art gallery, Prince George B.C. Canada. A BRUSH WITH CONCEPTS. This water colour and mixed medium show expressed a love of colour and the artist’s desire for contentment embraced in rural experience and feminist thought. Nine of the fourteen works shown are with private collectors throughout British Columbia, Canada.

November 1995 – Allegro Framing & Design Accents gallery, Prince George B.C. Canada. IMAGES OF MOMENTS. The first solo show of Terrill Welch’s water colour and mixed medium paintings received interest and were purchased by art collectors who continue to collect her work at regular intervals.

Past Group Shows:

Participation in group shows and exhibitions are varied and numerous and have included the local Arts Council venues such as the Mayne Island Library and B.C. Ferries vessels. Terrill Welch also exhibited her work in the Maltwood Art Gallery at the University of Victoria as part of the Visible Knowledge: Women’s World in Art,  January 24 to February 18, 2000. Terrill received Honours recognition in the Artist’s Workshop Juried Art Show in Prince George, May 1991.

Art Statement of Terrill Welch

I am a landscape painter exposing the mystery in an ordinary day.

Stripping away the human illusion of our separation from nature is at the core of my work. This illusion extends to a presumption of a separation between land, water and sky. I explore the interdependency of these natural elements.

These works reflect the surrounding landscapes. The brushstrokes render the light, shadow, movement, smells, sounds and emotions I am experiencing as I paint. The resulting paintings are my complete sensory experience, expressed.

The work is an invitation to join me in exploring the relationship between the innate elements of our environment and ourselves. My intention is for the viewers to find themselves within the landscapes as I have – filled with curiosity, wonder, discovery and a desire to survive. It is a tall order for a painter with a brush, making marks on a canvas. Yet, I must try. I must keep painting until the viewer pauses before the work and weeps in their knowing – without our natural world, we will no longer exist. It is my sacred work as a landscape painter to ensure that this message reaches into the heart of humanity.  This is my goal, my in-progress life’s work.
