Lighthouse Seas Trees and Snow depicted in new Canadian Landscape Paintings

From larger to small, oil paintings to painting sketch, five new works are being released. As you can see, the art studio has been a busy place since the beginning of 2017. Let’s start with the east coast of Canada first shall we?

West Point Lighthouse on Prince Edward Island is a storybook gem, complete with a resident ghost. Its compelling placement along the red sand shores and the rather unique black and white facade give rise to fancy.

Now coming back to the southwest coast of Canada and starting with our gorgeous Arbutus trees rendered on a magnificent grand canvas.

The earth turns and the sun comes up. The earth turns again and the sun goes down. This is one simple measure of a day. What time will it be tomorrow morning when the first light reaches the eastern side of the island? At about what time this evening will it be too dark to safely take the compost down the stairs and under the trees at the edge of yard without a flashlight? When will the snowdrops start to bloom on the southwest side of the house? What difference does a day make, or even a few hours? These questions are possibly best answered by trees. At least, this is what I am musing about today as I continue my inner travels.

To give you an idea of scale, here is a photograph taken in the warm pinkish light of the Spring Art Gala this weekend on Mayne Island. The window opening is about the same height as the painting at 5 feet tall.

It is definitely a painting a viewer can walk into, proceed down the trail and disappear into nature!

Next we have a smaller quiet seascape of Reef Bay on Mayne Island.

The moody violet mauve of a west coast winter afternoon resists the temptation to become bruised and pensive. Resting lightly on our awareness it holds us well within the confines of melancholy rather than just plain old miserable.

Following the winter’s late afternoon light drifts pass on its journey to the cloud bank quilting the Coastal Mountains. Our gaze crosses the Straight of Georgia and returns. We are called to the shore and sea as they perform a tango that is as old as as time.

This winter has provided the southwest coast with a series of snowfalls. Here is a rare walnut oil quick plein air painting sketch of the Japanese Garden in the snow.

Sold – End of Day with Arbutus – Contemporary Canadian Landscape Painting

There are times when paintings find their new homes before the paint is dry. Such is the case with this 8 x 10 inch oil on canvas END OF DAY WITH ARBUTUS completed four days ago. Packaged carefully to protect the still-tacky surface the painting is on its way to a new collector in British Columbia, Canada. The buyer had been waiting for months watching for “their” painting to come off my easel. It finally happened. Love at first sight. This painting was sold before it could be release officially here or in the Artsy Home online gallery.

END OF DAY WITH ARBUTUS 8 x 10 oil on canvas

My comments as I set this painting aside to “rest” on four days ago….The body and weight of the evening light just before it dipped over the far hill was enchanting. The eyes were doing tricks as they saw into the shadows and recognized the reflected light. It was a bit of a Kandinsky (Russian Painter) moment where in a fleeting decision I dipped into the light blue to trap the last of the light onto my canvas – a wrong colour that felt just right. I liked it then and I like it now.

Evening and the Arbutus Tree – a large west coast oil painting

The sun is going down fast in the late afternoon of November out on Georgina Point, Mayne Island . I marvel at the orange glow and the hues of the heavy mist in the distance of our west coast landscape. I knew then that this most-loved tree was once again going to grace one of my canvases – a large one this time. There is the coolness of a winter sea with soft waves barely evident on the shore. There is a quiet and a peace that often accompanies the end of a day. There is a sense of being alive without separation between land, sea and sky. It is often such with the Canadian landscape but so hard to portray in away that someone who has never been, never stood where I am standing will know what it is I speak about. Yet, this tree knows and seems to be willing to assist me in my interpretation.

From its clinging roots dug into the sandstone bank…

As a Canadian Landscape painter I am often challenged to find my way visually and spiritually into and through my physical environment. I have not yet told or even succinctly understood all that happened on this canvas. All I know is something in me has changed during the process. I have discovered an aspect of my being that I did not know existed before.

I write more about the process and influences behind this painting over on my Creative Potager blog at http://creativepotager.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/unraveling-the-artistic-influences-and-intentions-behind-the-painting-evening-and-the-arbutus-tree

Enjoy the naked freshness of this painting as it is released from this artist’s studio.
