West Coast Sea Escape Show

As the spring days really begin, we have a new “West Coast Sea Escape” show with paintings by Terrill Welch in the Terrill Welch Gallery Pod, OPEN DAILY 11-4 with extended hours 10-4 for the Made on Mayne Spring Tour April 7th – 8th at 428 Luff Rd, Mayne Island B.C. We look forward to your visits both online and in person to enjoy these seascape paintings that are showing until May 17, 2023 in our unique gallery pod in the woods.

Slipping out to the gallery pod every morning, we make sure everything is ready for your self browsing visit. If we are available, we do come out and say “hello”. However, the gallery pod is designed for walk in viewing and you are encouraged to go in and explore the art on your own. There are lists of artwork, QR codes to request purchase and telephone numbers to text or call for assistance.

The seascape painting “China Beach in Late February” on the top right is new and this is its first time being in a show. China Beach is on the southwest tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

We are thrilled to have the large 40 x 60 inch seascape painting of Active Pass anchoring this show across the back of the gallery pod. The city seascape to its right is a newer painting interpreting a location in the Victoria B.C. area.

These landscape paintings of the sea remind us of our constant relationship with both continuity and change with beginnings and endings overlapping in endless rhythms.

Lighthouse Seas Trees and Snow depicted in new Canadian Landscape Paintings

From larger to small, oil paintings to painting sketch, five new works are being released. As you can see, the art studio has been a busy place since the beginning of 2017. Let’s start with the east coast of Canada first shall we?

West Point Lighthouse on Prince Edward Island is a storybook gem, complete with a resident ghost. Its compelling placement along the red sand shores and the rather unique black and white facade give rise to fancy.

Now coming back to the southwest coast of Canada and starting with our gorgeous Arbutus trees rendered on a magnificent grand canvas.

The earth turns and the sun comes up. The earth turns again and the sun goes down. This is one simple measure of a day. What time will it be tomorrow morning when the first light reaches the eastern side of the island? At about what time this evening will it be too dark to safely take the compost down the stairs and under the trees at the edge of yard without a flashlight? When will the snowdrops start to bloom on the southwest side of the house? What difference does a day make, or even a few hours? These questions are possibly best answered by trees. At least, this is what I am musing about today as I continue my inner travels.

To give you an idea of scale, here is a photograph taken in the warm pinkish light of the Spring Art Gala this weekend on Mayne Island. The window opening is about the same height as the painting at 5 feet tall.

It is definitely a painting a viewer can walk into, proceed down the trail and disappear into nature!

Next we have a smaller quiet seascape of Reef Bay on Mayne Island.

The moody violet mauve of a west coast winter afternoon resists the temptation to become bruised and pensive. Resting lightly on our awareness it holds us well within the confines of melancholy rather than just plain old miserable.

Following the winter’s late afternoon light drifts pass on its journey to the cloud bank quilting the Coastal Mountains. Our gaze crosses the Straight of Georgia and returns. We are called to the shore and sea as they perform a tango that is as old as as time.

This winter has provided the southwest coast with a series of snowfalls. Here is a rare walnut oil quick plein air painting sketch of the Japanese Garden in the snow.

Happy New Year with the best 15 paintings of 2015

It is here? Already? How sudden it seems to have come to close this fine painting year of 2015. In the studio or roaming the seaside, hillsides and trails, the artist’s brushes have done their thing, creating just over 50 original works including 28 oil paintings and 23 acrylic painting sketches. Some of these have been en plein air and others have been rendered from reference materials and memory. Regardless of their humble beginnings, each holds a short moment of a life lived. At first, only 10 works were going to be selected for the year-end roundup. But alas, the selection resisted such refinement. So here it goes, in no particular order, the artist’s selection of the best 15 paintings and painting sketches of 2015. Happy New Year! Enjoy!

In this 2015 year, a total of 25 original works has left the studio into private collections. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to highlight all of the paintings here that are loved and were purchased this year by a long and growing list of international collectors. What we DO have is a sampling of some of the best work of the 2015. In making selections, there is an attempt to represent major themes and interests of the artist as well as style trends in her work. Therefore, if you do not see your treasured painting in this list, it is not because it is not worthy of recognition. It is! And it is yours to enjoy everyday. Instead, see if you can find a painting that is similar in theme and style to the one you have on your “Terrill Welch original” art collection. It was a good year for painting and 15 is just too small a number to capture all the best works!

These paintings and painting sketches are not linked to a specific online gallery because there will be further changes in the months ahead about where work will be available. For now, the best option is to browse the online galleries listed below or contact the artist directly about a painting or painting sketch you are interested in purchasing.

Note from artist Terrill Welch:

This year would not have been possible without each of you! Your support, shout outs, cheering and collecting of paintings that inspire and connect with your own wishes and daily life are all part of the success these pieces have experienced. Thank you!  May you experience the richness of kindness, courage, love, curiosity and appreciation in abundance! All the best of 2016!

Northern California Contemporary Landscape Oil Paintings

Seven new landscape oil paintings of northern California by Canadian Contemporary artist Terrill Welch become available for purchase today. Using her plein air and photography sketches as well as her memory, these works are inspired from Terrill’s slow travel down and up the coast this spring.

The dynamic movement of the sea, sky and light at Arena Lighthouse in northern California mesmerizes and inspires.

Knowing what is coming and yet unable to decide whether to stay or to move forward or back from the surf as it builds its strength before coming ashore again. This is the first of three related northern California surf paintings.

A vibration followed by the hard pressure of full impact. We know that the sea will wear at the stone repeatedly until it gives but in this moment of connecting we are fooled.

There is a full-exhale as the surf releases all that it holds before gathering itself to return again. Moisture appears in small droplets on our bare skin. Only then is there an audible sigh. This is the third of three related paintings of the northern California surf.

The scent in the air changes rapidly as the warm light and cool shadows are rearranged overhead. New leaves and blades of grass unfold and push forward. Knowingly or unknowingly we recognize this ordinary spring day with rolling thunderclouds.

Big fat fluffy clouds move swiftly across the early spring brilliant green of the Fremont Hills. The dark drama mirrored in the quarry lakes. A brief burst of rain did not reach the landscape until early evening.

The haze and atmosphere are warm and rich – almost buttery, even in early spring. There is a constant taste of chalk with a hint of salt on the air in this drought-ridden geography. It is a private view for the viewer alone to savour. The road denotes a connection to civilization that does not intrude on the landscape.
