Additions to the Red Line Series and more

In an ambitious effort to get more of Terrill Welch’s work available to art collectors and fans during our special Gallery Pod opening offer, we have released two more paintings and two painting studies. Three of these works are in Terrill’s developing Red Line Series about the impacts of climate change on our much loved landscapes. Let’s start with the latest of these paintings first…

Artist notes: Emerald Lake is a compelling mountain location with a stunning lake below. This work started with a plein air study just as the ice was breaking up. The broken part of the red line is to leave a little bit of hope in our ability to change our behaviour in the face of the consequences from environmental impacts.

Red Line Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park by Terrill Welch, 20 x 30 inch, walnut oil on canvas.

Next up is a small study following major atmospheric river flooding on the west coast of British Columbia last November.

Artist notes: I started from an intuitive place with no plan or sketch, just a haunting idea that comes following the recent flooding in British Columbia and the amount of debris that ended up on our Mayne Island shores. I have a very old night terror of being in a car that slides off the road over a steep bank into the Fraser River on the way to town where we lived and then starts to fill with murky water. My earliest memory of this nightmare are about the age of five and it repeated itself every few months with further embellishments right up until sometime in my mid thirties when in my dream state I somehow figured out how to get out of the sinking car and float to the surface. Then the nightmare never came back except as a waking memory now and again and when watching and reading about the flood mudslide victims.

Red Line 04, Flooding, Strait of Georgia by Terrill Welch, 9 x 12 inch walnut oil on unstretched canvas.

For more details click HERE.

Then there is this small study on paper in gouache…

Artist notes: The waves and sea move towards the shore with no visible evidence of their hidden challenges. I did this in gouache as a study on paper and it is unframed.

For more details click HERE.

There are two more Red Line paintings just about ready for release and we anticipate these to be out within the next few of weeks in anticipation of the second group of featured works in our new Gallery Pod.

For the final release this week, we have what is primarily a memory that is revisited every year or so when Terrill goes home to spend time with her parents living on a farm outside of Vanderhoof. This is a landscape of her childhood and the first that she drew and then started painting in oils when she was just fourteen years old.

Artist notes: The early morning mist filtering sunlight through the willows, poplars and cotton woods beside the Stuart River is a magical time of day and filled with years of memories.

Happy Earth Day 2022

A note from landscape painter, Terrill Welch, for Earth Day 2022 as we feature her painting: “Conducting An Orchestra”, oil on canvas, 40 x 36 inches. More information about this west coast oil painting is available at: https://www.artworkarchive.com/profile/terrill-welch/artwork/conducting-an-orchestra-terrill-welch

In her own words…

“I am a landscape painter exposing life’s mystery in an ordinary day….”

“Stripping away the human illusion of our separation from nature is at the core of my work. I have a driving need to succeed in creating bridges with my art between humanity and nature, before it is too late. This illusion extends to a presumption of a separation between land, water and sky. I explore the inter-dependency of these natural elements….”

“These works reflect my surrounding landscapes. The brushstrokes render the light, shadow, movement, smells, sounds and emotions I am experiencing in our natural world. The resulting paintings are my complete sensory experience, expressed…”

“It is a tall order for a painter with a brush, making marks on a canvas. Yet, I must try…”

“ I must keep painting until we pause before the work and weep in our knowing – without our natural world, we will no longer exist. It is my sacred work as a landscape painter to ensure that this message reaches into the hearts of humanity. This is my mission – my in-progress life’s work. Happy Earth Day 2022!”

Trends in Sales of Terrill Welch Paintings

And another recent Terrill Welch painting has been scooped up by art collectors before it could be listed.…

SOLD – “Just The Sea” by Terrill Welch , acrylic on gessobord panel, 11 x 14 inches.

This is a common occurrence. The best way to learn about Terrill’s new paintings as they are being painted is to sign up for our newsletter “A Brush with Life”. The link is on our website. What can we say? If you want first choice, you need to be connected and ready to make an inquiry to purchase immediately. Last year we found homes for 44 of Terrill’s paintings out of her dwindling available new and earlier painting inventory. She only released a total of 28 new works in 2021. We anticipate this trend to continue of equal or more works sold than there are new works available each year because sales of her work have been trending in this direction for a long time. We do not have a crystal ball of course and things could move in a totally different direction with little warning. Still, we feel obliged to let know what we are experiencing right now.

There is another option to secure one of Terrill Welch’s painting and that is to commission a work. However, she only does a very few of these each year because they disrupted her ongoing painting practice. But it is still an option, if she has time.

So don’t say we didn’t ever let you know. 😉

Happy New Year As We Celebrate Terrill Welch’s Top Ten of 2021

All the best of 2022 from the southwest coast of Canada! May you have time for long conversations. May you read books simply for the pleasure of it. May you view art that makes your heart sing. May you be healthy and filled with gratitude. May you lend a hand to others in their moments of less fortunate. May your creative spirit find its way into the darkest corners. May you know love, give love and be love. Happy New Year from the Terrill Welch Gallery to all our family, friends, art fans and art collectors near and far!

Today we offer you Terrill Welch’s favourite Top Ten of 2021 paintings for your viewing pleasure. Many of these works are already in private collections. Terrill Welch released 29 paintings in 2021 and 44 original works from her inventory were sold along with many reproductions. She knew this day would come but she anticipated that it would have been about five more years in the future. Fortunately, we have a healthy inventory of her work available and now represent the work of other artists that are her past students. In this way, we can keep providing the paintings that you love to add to your art collections and for viewing and sharing with others. For now though, in no particular order, are Terrill’s personal favourite paintings that were completed in 2021.

And the final selection in the Top Ten of 2021 is a painting that is part of Terrill’s Red Line Series that will bridge 2021 and 2022.

Artist notes: Rising sea levels result in eroding shorelines and heat domes combined with low tides and atmospheric rivers filling the Strait of Georgia are just some of the challenges faced by the Salish Sea.

Great News for Our Summer Art Shows

Great news! Beginning July 1, 2021, as per BC’s provincial health recommendations, masks are no longer mandatory. Masks are recommended in indoor public places for all people 12 and older who are not yet fully vaccinated. There will be no hard limit on folks in the gallery. On very busy days, we may regulate the flow of traffic to allow people to distance as spaces are small. As always, if you would like to make an appointment outside of regular business hours (and we can both be masked if needed, just let me know) call 250-744-4560, or email tawelch@shaw.ca to make arrangements.

The Terrill Welch Gallery at 478 Village Bay Rd, Mayne Island B.C. will have walk-in hours for both gallery rooms 11-2 on Thursdays and Saturdays and by appointment on other days. The gallery’s Arbutus Room is open for walk-in viewing whenever the Dragonfly next to it is open 10-4 Tuesday through Sunday. All work is available for viewing in detail anytime online at: ArtWork Archive for original paintings and acrylic sketches currently available

Thank you everyone for your continued support! We look forward to sharing our new shows with you:

June 24 – September 6, 2021

On our bellies leaning over a dock in Horton Bay, bracing against the winds in a storm to capture large rollers coming ashore or lengthening our stride along a forested seaside trail are all part of life on Mayne Island next to the Salish Sea.

In addition, Terrill Welch will be working on a large 36 x 72 inch panoramic view of Glenwood Farm Lookout in the Terrill Welch Gallery Arbutus Room (478 Village Bay Rd. in Miners Bay) starting today July 3, 2021 until it is finished. New photos like the one below will be added to a special album on our Facebook Page as the painting proceeds.

Enjoy! And drop down and say “hello” in person if you are on Mayne Island in British Columbia.

Landscape Paintings Sell During Unprecedented Times

Against formidable odds in extraordinary times, Terrill Welch’s contemporary landscape paintings continue to be acquired by art collectors. In fact, out of the last nine paintings she has released since February 14, 2020, five have sold. One large seascape, that she painted near the beginning of her Province’s “stay at home” orders, was sold while still wet on the easel and before the last brushstroke had been applied. An International corporate inquiry resulted in a request for a commission. The sale of another work continued on into a special request for a second painting. And so it has gone, until between then and now a total of ten original oil paintings of various sizes have left the gallery for adventures of their own. We will highlight the last five newest work that have sold because it will be the only time they will be introduced to you. As you will see, these paintings have been rendered with that special all-in, full sensory expression that Terrill’s paintings are known to convey. Viewers frequently comment on what they can hear, feel and smell as well as what they see when standing before her work. It is no wonder they have been chosen to share the homes of admirers during these past few months!

SOLD Rough Seas and Sunshine by Terrill Welch, 20 x 24 inch oil on canvas
SOLD China Beach Morning by Terrill Welch, 8 x 10 inch plein air acrylic sketch
SOLD Sunrise at Gordon’s Beach study by Terrill Welch, 8 x 10 acrylic sketch
SOLD Rhine River in Basel Switzerland by Terrill Welch, 14 x 18 inch oil on canvas
SOLD Rolling Wave French Beach Vancouver Island British Columbia
by Terrill Welch, 30 x 40 inch walnut oil on canvas

So, here on this small rural Mayne Island, off the southwest coast of Canada, you can still witness Terrill Welch standing before her easel moving paint from palette to canvas as she strengthens her studio practice, doubles her physical gallery space, enhances her online presence even further and brings on three more artists to show along side her in the new Arbutus Room that is dedicated specifically to west coast landscape paintings. Before you go though, be sure to sign up for our newsletter below and then share it with others who might be interested. It truly is one of the best ways to stay in touch and get a chance to scoop up a new work while it is still under progress.
