Summer Release of an Eclectic Group of Seven Oil Paintings

Summer sun is having a long heated love affair with the southwest coast of Canada this year. It makes for some cautious lazy days as one is vigilant about fire hazards and water conservation. But the studio is cool right up until late afternoon. New work is completed and a few older pieces revisited. Decisions are made and gradually a body of new paintings is ready for release. They are varied and without a common link other than the artist’s brush marks. If connections between works is what you seek, come on back next week when the California paintings from my travels earlier in the year will be released. For now, lets skip and dance through a studio rendering of random pieces…..

November light lingers as it crosses the full depth of the room. Paintings are in temporary positions. Most paintings in the studio are accustomed to these circumstances as they appear and disappear out into the world. This painting thought it might be kept. Seven months it remained hopeful.

In addition two Terrill Welch landscape paintings have been accepted in the 29th Sooke Fine Arts Show July 24 to August 3, 2015. This is the largest juried event in the region, representing Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands artists. The competition is fierce and jury selection rigorous. I am honour to be included. There are 375 pieces selected and the event attracts more than 8000 visitors, tourists and art patrons throughout its 11-day run. I am thrilled to have these two works represented this year and I’m looking forward to the show. If you are in the neighbourhood during this time, I highly recommend going to this premiere event. There will be some outstanding work to satisfy the artistic appreciation in everyone. Just let me know if you need more of the details. New Growth West Coast in late May – Canadian landscape oil painting

The winter and spring rains have left both moss, salal and trees dressed in new frocks of vibrant green. It won’t last. As summer progresses the new growth will harden off and become dull and crunchy in the summer’s heat. Today though – we celebrate!

My painterly goal is to bring the viewer into the landscape so it is experienced rather than observed. The method of doing this varies from one painting to another but the necessity to do so never wavers. In this painting, I want viewers to feel the soft earth under their feet. Breathe the damp freshness of a rain that is not quite complete. Touch the tender new growth as if their eyes are closed. Smell the pungent salt of the sea lapping against their inner ear… all the while in mid-step, slightly off balance as the mechanisms of the eye and brain scramble for clarity in a driving need to still the body’s surrounds – a driving need to liberate the viewer from within the landscape. My painting challenge is to keep the viewer experiencing the landscape from within for as long as possible.

The Edge and At The Beach Another Time – Canadian landscape paintings

Two new Canadian landscape paintings are ready to release from my studio.

THE EDGE  is a brand new 48 x 24 inch rendering of a sandstone bluff battered by the wind and sea but also hosts a familiar arbutus tree on its top most tip. It is a rare large long-lean painting to out of my studio.  THE EDGE is about strength, beauty and opportunity.

AT THE BEACH ANOTHER TIME is a 12 x 12 inch rework of an older painting. I seldom do this as I much prefer to start with a blank canvas but sometimes a painting will continue to call me – it is like it was never finished…

Evening Thunderclouds over the Strait of Georgia – dramatic seascape sky painting

Thunderclouds caught in the setting sun make miniatures out the majestic coastal range on the far side of the Straight of Georgia. The very swiftness of their movement in the fading light offers us a skyward dance across the sky which we are all but bewitched into accepting. How does a painter capture this swelling of spirit and visceral sense of tingling presence? The answer may seem obvious – with a brush of course. But is it really that simple? To take a moment like this and stand before a blank canvas with a few oil pigments squeezed from their tubes and then translate such an experience? No it is difficult. In fact it took me two years to get up the nerve to try. Yet, with several photographic references from the experience it was easy to be standing on the shore at Georgina Point looking up at the sky and to be swept away by these cloud partners as my brush recorded each pass we made across the sky.

Late December West Coast Sunrise small oil painting

The deep mauve and purple with yellow, pink and orange over the dark water of a winter sunrise brings such joy and conviction to the day. The coolness of the west coast winter air and soft slap of the waves from the sea greetings tells us we are alive. Yes, so very much alive. The quick brush strokes of a small oil painting study capture the experience. It is another painting for squared to the sea series which I started over a year ago.

Squared to the Sea – new painting series by Terrill Welch

Themes often emerge when an artist is painting that then become conscious explorations. Such is the case with my latest series of paintings “Squared to the Sea” which began to appear a little over a year ago. The series is likely not finished as I still have some square canvas in the studio. I will add new ones over time as they are completed. Yet it seemed like time to introduce the work as group.

The square is a challenging composition to bring to life with intrigue and interest. I have been drawn to the challenge and the idea and with my ongoing love of the sea it seemed like a worthy exploration. The following paintings are organized in a pleasing visual order for your viewing pleasure. Please note, as is often the case before I can present a series,  some of these paintings are already part of private collections. However, there are still many that are awaiting homes and I have listed purchase locations after each painting. Enjoy!

ALONE BY THE SEA

Quiet places fill a deep well within. East Point on Saturna Island is one of Canada’s newest national parks. This scene would be most recognizable to anyone who had walked out to the end of the point during a low tide and then turned to look back towards land. Alone By The Sea is a long way from lonely on this warm sunny August afternoon with a cool breeze coming in off the water.

SPILLING OVER

An ideal accent for a contemporary room with its soft tones. The movement of the water in this piece gives it strength beyond its size and allows the painting to provide both peace and energy.

PEARS BY THE SEA

This particular kind of lovely pear has been painted and photographed for what seems like forever. They are a powerful symbol of abundance, cultivation or agriculture and culture. I want to marry them – at least for awhile – with the sea because the sea is, at least for me, a symbol of eternal change and continuity. My desire is to go more deeply into our human relationship to our environment. A study of pears by the sea seems like a good place to start as any.

ROMANCING SUMMER BY THE SEA

There are those mornings in August by the sea where the sun is filtered by mist with a the promise of blue skies seeping into your awaking. Such is this day. Some paintings seem to guide the brush from the first stroke of the underpainting. The canvas, the brush and the artist move across the surface as if choreographed by a grand mistress of creativity. Did this painting come out of some illusive muse? Possibly but it was highly influenced by several known influences. The first being my experience on Saturna Island last summer in August which provided the reference image and essence of a particularly spectacular summer morning on East Point. Secondly, I was reading THE SWAN THIEVES by Elizabeth Kostova. If you have read the book you will know how deeply the sea, romance and painting are part of its gift to the reader. Finally, just before beginning this painting I was in an art gallery in Sidney B.C. Canada and admiring an artist hand-embellished reproduction of “Evening thoughts” by Italian artist Pino Daeni. I have seen an original Pino painting several times and reproductions many times. But this time I was admiring how he might accomplish that sensual mystery in his work. Then I asked myself, could I possibly capture this in a landscape, particularly one I loved and already could sense its sensual presence. Of course my figure does not have flowing dresses. She is a strong muscular modern woman with little to give her gender away until you see her smile that touches her lightly around her eyes. But this won’t happen today. Today, we admire her, head tilted down as she walks over the sandstone enjoying the summer morning mist in August by the sea.

30 x 30 inch oil on canvas – available at Xanadu Gallery Studio HERE.

THE SEA TO ME

Lusty dank seaweed brings its dark beauty to the summer sandstone shores along the inside passage on Saturna Island. My hand remembers. – defining the sea and softening the mountains into a grander relationship between sea and sky – closing in the view and leaving a sense of more to see beyond the edges of the canvas.

12 12 inch oil on canvas – in private collection British Columbia, Canada.

It is often difficult to decide at what point to show a body of work.  When I feel I am closer to completing my exploration of this subject matter I hope to put this work together in a catalog or art book. For now, I hope you have enjoyed this expanse of time as expressed through these paintings.
