Pitcher Apples Pears still life painting

With heavy coastal rain just starting to ease it seems a perfect time to release this warm and vibrant still life painting. This 16 x 20 inch oil on canvas painting is a study of whites and how they are always leaning towards one colour or another. The tastes, smells and texture of this still life slid onto the canvas in loose wet-on-wet brushstrokes.

Arbutus on Mt. Parke – landscape oil painting

Morning lifts heavy mist from the highest places while the sun dances cheek-to-cheek with the late October shadows. As these arbutus trees extend themselves in prayer, angels dissipate into the warmth gathering on top of the Mayne Island Mt. Parke ridge.

Seaside Mayne Island – Large Canadian Landscape Oil Painting

Some moments are impossible to forget. Such is a late afternoon walk in this location on the shores of Mayne Island. Meander along a trail by the sea, taking time to stop and let the moment settle in. This large contemporary Canadian west coast landscape painting is a full 60 x 36 inch oil on canvas with 1.5 inch edges that will be painted as desired by the purchasing art collector.

[Update February 2017 – this painting is now sold. View other available work HERE.]

I want o be clear, this painting is five feet tall and three feet wide. As a contemporary Canadian landscape painter, I only do a few paintings this size because I still want room to move in my work space. Yet, I can’t seem to resist lugging these grand-size canvases back to the studio and letting loose with the paint. There is also a smaller 10 x 8 inch study of this same scene which is now in a private collection.

This will be one of the paintings featured at my November 9th & 10th Open Studio event.

Chasing October Sun by the Sea – an en plein air oil painting

There is a warm October sun down by the sea. We stay and watch as it drifts along the shore. No regrets.

Canadian Contemporary Landscape Painting Rhythm of the Sea Edith Point Released

Completed in late March 2013, this painting has been slow to release for purchase by Canadian contemporary landscape painter, Terrill Welch. For all its gray-scale rendering this painting is anything but neutral. The sea rolls forward onto the shore. Trees tingle from the day’s sun while the rocks release their summer heat as the water charges across their surface. I am there. You are there. The salt spray is moist on our skin and the rhythm of the sea matches our breath, our heartbeat, and answers a call to all that is knowable.

SOLD The Mt. Baker Reach Canadian landscape painting

There is something about coming to the Mayne Island shore and seeing Mount Baker across the Strait of Georgia that is like magic. No photograph seems to adequately capture my surprise and delight so I took the task to my canvas instead.

Large autumn seascape oil painting released Today – Sliced with a Tear

There is something about autumn by the sea with the gray melancholy wrapped in fall colours. This particular day is one of those slow-baked, melancholy west coast Sundays, so moist and tender you can slice it with a tear.

This is the first of four huge canvases I have completed over the past several months. I started this painting last year about this time but it was not completed until February. However, I was not ready yet to let it go out into the world. I coveted closely, showing it here, on my blog and to close friends, family and art collectors but it was not for sale. Today though, I am ready and I am releasing this painting to a good independently wealthy or willing-to-take-out-a-mortgage home. This is one large painting! 🙂

Morning In The Kitchen – Small Abstract Painting by Terrill Welch

What do we remember once we have looked away? What is left of the morning light in the kitchen after I have eaten breakfast and climbed the stairs to the studio? Maybe something like this, possibly. A small and rare abstract painting amongst my current body of work. Painting is on gessobord mounted on a two-inch natural wood cradle. No Framing needed.

Blackberries Golden Plums Transparent Apple Still Life Painting

For much of the past couple of months I have been absorbed in the work of Richard Diebenkorn, anAmerican abstract expressionist, and that of Cezanne and Matisse. Painting seems to be primarily about light and colour for me, not in the absence of form but form most often plays second violin – holding the composition together without any solo parts. The days of light, seasons, colour, form and space collide within my ordered and defined sensory system. Not chaos. No not that. Only adjustments and a release from specifics. Blackberries and golden plums are my favourites. The transparent apples just happen to ripen at the same time adding a nice shape and colour for balancing a still life plate.

Update November 14, 2014: This painting is now Sold! Detailed viewing  and purchase information for other original paintings by Terrill Welch HERE.

Blackberries do not keep for very long on a plate so I took the time to also do a few photography reference images. This one, which is similar to the painting has been released on its own merit as a still life photography image.

Golden Plums An Apple And A Green Vase Still Life Painting

My imagined private studio lessons recently with Cezanne has left me wanting for a chance to peer over his shoulder as he painted and I assume paced his way through long periods of time constructing the structure and rendering his still life paintings. How did he decide to have falling fruit, and tilted vases, tables or twisted warped, walls and furniture with more than one view-point in a single painting? What was it that brought him to these considerations?

My12 x 16 inch oil on canvas painting results are of course a colourful still life that is anything but still.
