Mayne Island Arbutus Trees and High Seas Paintings

Recent weeks have been productive, resulting in three new and two revisited works.

Northeasterly Morning Strait of Georgia Mayne Island BC – 20 x 40 inch oil on canvas. The cool winter light of early morning splashes with the waves in the high winds along the Strait of Georgia. Chilled to shivering, I stand transfixed. What if this were my last breath? Ah, but it would be a good one! View from Oyster Bay on Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada.

High Winds Strait of Georgia Mayne Island BC – 8 x 10 inch acrylic painting sketch. Some days there is a wild dance between the sea and the wind along the Strait of Georgia. A quick acrylic painting sketch simply to enjoy the interaction.

Update: February 25, 2016: This painting is now sold.

Late Afternoon Georgina Point Mayne Island BC – 8 x 10 inch acrylic sketch. I come back repeatedly to find the perfect day with the most perfect light. Is this it? A quick sketch to explore the quality of an early winter evening by the sea.

Late September Sun on Vulture Ridge Mayne Island BC – 11 x 14 inch plein air acrylic sketch. Plein air painting up on Henderson Hill at Vulture Ridge is a worthy climb on September 28, 2014. Unfortunate a small correction did not happen to this work until late December 2016, resulting it a lengthy delay in the painting sketch’s release. However, the freshness of that day has no expiry date.

Arbutus on Mt. Parke – 12 x 16 inch oil on canvas. Morning lifts heavy mist from the highest places while the sun dances cheek-to-cheek with the late October shadows. As these arbutus trees extend themselves in prayer, angels dissipate into the warmth gathering on top of the Mayne Island Mt. Parke ridge.

Happy New Year with the best 7 paintings of 2016

In 2016, there are 24 oil paintings and 32 acrylic painting sketches for a total of 56 completed works by the Canadian artist Terrill Welch. Many of these oil paintings are larger canvases and cover specific geographical areas of both the west and east coast of Canada. Most of the painting sketches were completed during a spring seven-week art trip to Prince Edward Island and remain unavailable in the artist’s private studio collection. In total, 30 paintings or painting sketches were released in 2016 and overall 15 works from the available pieces left Terrill’s studio into private collection.

The selection for the best paintings of 2016 is limited to an arbitrary number of seven works because choosing 16 for 2016 out of a total of 56 works just didn’t seem to create enough of a meaningful selection process. So here it goes, in no particular, order, the artist’s choice of the seven best paintings 2016.

Catching Waves with New West Coast Painting Release

There is a brisk northwesterly wind stirring up the Salish Sea in the bright autumn sun. I step carefully down the sandstone trail to the shore below the lighthouse at Georgina Point. Looking out across the Strait of Georgia, it seems that the best thing to do is to catch a few waves.

As you come into the entrance, there is a rack with brochures and information to the the right. Be sure to pick up your rack card about Terrill Welch to take with you before heading up the stairs. The card has a short bio, contact information and online links on the back for later reference. It also makes an excellent bookmark 😉

Looking up the stairwell to the first landing, you will get a glimpse of the smallest of the large paintings in the show.

Art in public spaces such as a library are truly for the people and allow for art to be an engagement with our ordinary-everyday. There is a somewhat utilitarian connection that develops between the magic of paint on a canvas and walls where emergency lighting, red fire hydrant taps and stacks of books frame a landscape view.   Historic Canadian landscape painter, Emily Carr, would have liked that.

There are several prints, large and small, of Emily Carr’s paintings as part of the permanent work on display in the Emily Carr Branch.

large print of Emily Carr painting at the Emily Carr Branch of Greater Victoria Library by Terrill Welch IMG_9523

To the right of this print is a quote in big wood letters…

There is nothing to compare with the push of life Emily Carr 1936 Journal photograph by Terrill Welch IMG_9528

Terrill agrees with these sentiments and she is pleased to have her work alongside Emily again. As you may already know, this isn’t the first time their work has been placed shoulder-to -houlder. Terrill Welch already has two paintings in collections that include such renown Canadian landscape painters as Emily Carr, A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris.

On the far wall, there are three very unique view of the west coast landscape.

But, it was these last three paintings that led to the name of the show being “Above the Stacks – land and sea.” The first painting on the right is the only one of the eight that is based on Terrill’s working trip to Prince Edward Island this spring.

You are always welcome catch a ferry and come to Mayne Island to visit Terrill in her strawbale-timberframe home studio. Or you can drop by her website day or night, from anywhere in the world to catch up on studio news including new releases, shows and sales.

But, there is nothing quite like some open space, bright walls, and the hush of a public library to enjoy, ponder and consider these large Canadian landscape oil paintings. If you live in Victoria or happen to be visiting, do take the time to drop by and have a browse!

Here are a few words from someone who did….

“Very few events could entice me to venture into the morass that is known as “Uptown”… but I’m so happy I went today, to the Emily Carr Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library, to bask in the display of Terrill Welch’s large landscape paintings. Terrill it was such a pleasure to see your work live! Photos and Facebook are fine but can never capture the live work. With each of your paintings I was able to imagine you applying the paint, making your marks, immersed in creation. I loved being able to inspect them close up and to stand back and allow the bigger effect to sink in. I fell in love with “Evening – The Arbutus Tree” (I love all your arbutus trees but this especially). The softness, the tones and the abstract forms gave a strength and softness that is so appealing. ~Jan Godfred

All these paintings are for sale and details are available these and other paintings in the online gallery HERE.

Terrill would like to thank the great hanging team who worked with her including Carolina, Wayne (the ladder person) and David! Also, a huge thank you to the Emily Carr Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library for this invitation and opportunity.

Large Painting of Blooming Point PEI a meditation on World Peace

A painter can sometimes keep it simple and say that the painting painted itself. On occasion, this may even be the case. But not for this 40 x 60 inch canvas. It came with intentions that were sparked by a conversation with David Sandum, a Swedish painter and print maker living in Norway. He is also the author of the award-winning memoir I’ll Run Till the Sun Goes Down. We have been colleagues and friends for more than half a dozen years, or at least as much as one can be when living an ocean apart. The context for this painting was a dialogue following the latest in a series of terrorist attacks, this time it was Nice, France. The anger, bewilderment and confusion was felt bone deep. When one is a painter, there often seems to be only one thing that can be done in a situation like this – paint.  So, I made a commitment to do a painting while meditating about World Peace. My next work was a large seascape from my recent travels to Prince Edward Island. It seemed a fitting subject for this exercise. Here is the resulting canvas from  these painting meditations that took me several sessions….

In David Weale’s book, Whatever You Say – The talk of Islanders 1975-2005, he tells us about a mother on the North Shore of Prince Edward Island who use to warn her children to never to turn their back on the ocean. Upon finishing this painting, I believe we can also say “never turn your back on World Peace” because, like the sea, World Peace is unpredictable and, if we do not have one part of our being paying attention, at all times, we can find ourselves in real trouble. We imagine we know both the sea and World Peace. We believe we can navigate these every-changing landscapes without scars, tragedy and loss. But mostly, we only think we know our shadow selves, the dark side that is within each of us and part of the collective character of humanity. We fool ourselves into believing that the horror is from elsewhere, from an “other” that is separate from us. With every wave that meets the shore, the sea demonstrates how this is not so. The land and the sea are both part of the same whole, neither is constant, neither is willingly to give in to the other. Both are changed with each moment. Yet, for brief passages of time, we can gaze at the grand view and see what is possible. We may even be comfortable and turn away from our collective struggle between the separate parts of the same whole. We forget that the land can suddenly pushes up from forces far below the surface and displace the sea. We ignore that the sea can be tossed in vicious storms that tear at the cliffs and topple large chunks of red dirt and stone into the waters.  We tend to hang on, baffled by the interplay of our own contributions and those forces which we do not have any control. The concept of World Peace is possibly like this relationship between sea and land.

When we focus in on the details, we experience how the landscape disappears and can reshape itself into something much less recognizable.

What, at a distance, seemed solid and full of substance can become fluid, overlapping brushstrokes, loosely shaping the moving water and drifting sand dunes.

detail 2 Blooming Point PEI a meditation on World Peace 40 x 60 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch August 10 2016 IMG_9061

This painting is of an extraordinary place called Blooming Point in Prince Edward Island, Canada and it is a meditation about World Peace – holding the space, brush stroke by brush stroke, with all its complexities. Thank you David Sandum for your spark of inspiration and your frank thoughtfulness on this subject and so many others. This painting is dedicated to you.
