A Painter’s Corner and Plein Air Views with Terrill Welch

This staying home, self isolating and social distancing is hard on individuals and communities alike. Human-beings are such social creatures. It is a big ask even though it is necessary. We may find it hard to follow various orders and requests. Basically, we are being asked to do something that humans have not been born or nurtured to do – especially in a crisis. We want to be together and travel to the place we believe is the safest, even when our rational mind and experts tell us otherwise. This is a challenging time on so many levels.

An invitation from Contemporary Canadian Landscape Painter Terrill Welch –

“I am holding space for loving kindness, compassion and thoughtful resilience for each and everyone of us. I invite each of you to do the same. Take a moment and just imagine everyone closeby and afar embraced in love.”

A Painter’s Corner and Plein Air Views with Terrill Welch is a little less than 15 minute video of Terrill’s landscape painting world using snippets from May 2014 to March 2020. The music in the video is from the iMovie soundtrack options and is called “Hope” by Keith Kenniff. We hope you enjoy this quiet retreat from everyday worries and challenges.

We are near the beginning of our collective global journey with this COVID-19 virus. Our abilities to navigate the continual changes that are going to be asked of us will be paramount to shaping our future.

We can do this. It is going to test us as individuals and as a community beyond anything we are familiar with in our lifetime. Yet, I know we will come out the other side, whole, together and strong. Whatever happens and whatever we do, being kind is always possible. Let’s start there and proceed with thoughtfulness and personal accountability.

May this video bring you inner peace, strength, hope, resilience and compassion for others.

Art of Terrill Welch Gallery is Expanding

The Art of Terrill Welch Gallery is adding another gallery room to our location. This new room will allow the gallery to show both more of Terrill’s paintings and a small number of highly curated new works by other artists that we are deeply familiar with.

Art of Terrill Welch Gallery

The new gallery space will be named the “Arbutus Room” and will be in the former Dragonfly location, owned by Vania Williams, which is moving next door. The Arbutus Room will be dedicated to west coast and Salish Sea landscape paintings.

Vania Williams will also provide sales and retail support for the Art of Terrill Welch Gallery in the new Arbutus Room. This allows the Arbutus Room to be open year-round for the same hours as the Dragonfly. This arrangement will have the advantage of keeping the accessible side entrance available to Vania’s store and protect Terrill’s sacred painting time, even with the expanded gallery showings.

The Arbutus Room is anticipated to be open sometime in April or early May. Please stay tuned while we work out the details and complete the renovations. We look forward to providing you with the same great art and relaxed, personal and informed service on this new and grander scale in the near future.

Happy One Year Anniversary to the Terrill Welch Gallery

We are wishing our Terrill Welch Gallery a Happy 1st. Anniversary this August long weekend. A huge high-five to the little art gallery that CAN! The candy dish is filled and the walls are sparkling with large and small original seascapes paintings.

Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and the holiday Monday 11 – 4 mid April to mid November at 478 Village Bay Rd. Mayne Island B.C. or, as always, online 24/7 at TerrillWelchArtist.com or go directly to the online gallery HERE.

There is always something going! This week Terrill  shares what it is like on Sunday’s in the gallery.

The painting on the easel that celebrates this occasion is now completed except for the usual painting of edges, adding the hanging wire and a final photograph.

“Shanti’s Sunshine Bouquet”
24 x 18 in oil on canvas by Terrill Welch will be released soon.

And a few words from the painter herself about this painting…

There are people we all know that shine just a little brighter in their ordinary everyday interactions with us. Shanti is one of these people. When I asked her to design a bouquet for the gallery in celebration of its 1st year anniversary, I had no intention of doing a painting of it. But as I sat there watching the sun come around and seeing the flowers light front from the gallery lighting and in the back from the sun, well there was no question. It had to be done – simply to celebrate life and loving kindness!

I started with a few photography sketches to understand the composition I wanted. Then I hesitated. It was a busy weekend in the gallery. Could I possibly paint and attend to gallery guests? My head said “no” and my heart said “yes”… so I painted. The heart almost always gets its way and the head must scramble to keep up attend to the tasks that will prevent disaster – such as monitoring the blouses about to connect with wet paint on the canvas or the person who was about to step back and trip on the leg of the French Box easel. Not an easy job in a small space but we did it!

The painting took two days. The first day to bring the painting to rest and ensure it was alive and breathing on its own. I am working on a painting progress video for my email newsletter subscribers because this painting could have gone in several directions at one point and it is fun to see the path it chose. Then a second day was used to “put the pearls on” and see that the canvas held together as a whole. Done, done, done!

Now on to the next canvas…..

Light of Place Exposed Landscapes By Terrill Welch

Each place and each moment has its own light and to expose this everyday mystery is something that is often behind the brush marks of Canadian artist Terrill Welch. She has twenty landscape oil paintings that will be traveling up the province of British Columbia to be shown in the Williams Lake public gallery during the month of April, 2018.

A Tall Tale of Autumn Stuart River 16 x 12 inch oil on canvas is the poster painting for this show and you can preview all twenty paintings in the solo exhibition at her online gallery HERE.

Solo exhibition “Light of Place Exposed, Landscapes by Terrill Welch” can be viewed in the main gallery at The Station House Gallery in Williams Lake, British Columbia from Thursday, April 5th to Saturday, April 28th of 2018.

The Station House Gallery Hours: Monday  – Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Closed Sundays.

In the Williams Lake Tribune – “Light ripples through the Station House Gallery” by Tara Sprickerhoff April 11, 2018

How to get to The Station House Gallery: To get to the gallery is straightforward. The address is 1 Mackenzie Ave N., Williams Lake, B.C. and if you are coming from the north or south, just take the main Oliver street right into downtown from the four way stop on the highway and drive to the end where it meets Mackenzie Ave Noth. The gallery will be directly in front of you. However, if you like circle routes when you are traveling , turn at Mackenzie Ave N. if coming in from the north and drive into Williams Lake on this street until you get to Oliver Street. The Station House Gallery will be on your Right. You can then take Oliver Street to meet up with the highway south again. Of course if you are coming from the south it is the same in reverse.

Terrill Welch will be present for the opening of the exhibition on the evening of Thursday April 5, 2018 starting at 5:00 pm and she will say a few more words about the show then.

Pre-sales are welcomed by either the Terrill Welch Gallery or The Station House Gallery. All sold work will be shipped, delivered or available for pick up at the end of the exhibition.

Exposing The Mystery In An Ordinary Day

Recently Terrill Welch was asked what her art was about.

“I am a landscape painter, exposing the mystery in ordinary day” she replied, “want to see?”

With several large canvases prepped with grounds and underpaintings waiting for her in the winter studio and material being reworked for a new online teaching of oil painting classes starting early in the new year, a few moments were taken up with creating a short glimpse into Terrill’s work… so we can “see” what this Canadian landscape artist is doing. She will be thrilled if you take a second or two and watch the short video, leave a comment and share with others who might be interested. Enjoy!

The Terrill Welch Gallery is now closed until early April, except by appoint to visit the winter studio or her home studio. However, work is always available 24/7 in her online gallery. This has been a good year finding homes for paintings. So far, almost as many works left on adventures of their own as were released. However,  “available” works showing in the online gallery are current. So feel free to browse away HERE.

Also, beyond the showing of work in the Terrill Welch Gallery, there are two new solo exhibitions scheduled  for 2018 in public gallery spaces. If you are traveling in these areas of British Columbia or you are close by and want to make a special trip to see the work, specific details are below.

The first solo exhibition opening April 5th at The Station House Gallery in Williams Lake, British Columbia. The “Light of Place Exposed, Landscapes by Terrill Welch” show can be viewed in the main gallery until April 28th.

The second solo exhibition “Between Islands on the Salish Sea” will be at the Galiano Public Library on Galiano Island, British Columbia from September 10 to October 26, 2018.
