Three Large Oil Paintings of Trees Released

The winter studio time at the Terrill Welch Gallery has yielded three new large oil paintings of trees so far. Each of the featured trees on the big canvases are in their own special landscape and light. Let’s have a look shall we?

Morning Coon Bay, Galiano Island, B.C. – 48 x 36 inch oil on canvas

At this northern tip of a boat access park, on the long narrow Galiano Island, there is mystery in the morning light catching sandstone and trees.

Details and purchase information HERE.

Arbutus Tree Reaching – 36 x 48 inch oil on canvas

Late afternoon sun catches the curves of a grand old arbutus tree reaching out into Campbell Bay on Mayne Island in British Columbia. I want not to move or even shift my gaze for a very long time.

Details and purchase information HERE.

Winter with the Old Fir on the Ridge – 48 x 24 inch oil on canvas

The snow on the north side of ridge slowed my climb with several stops to catch my breath. But it was worth it! I had the Mt. Parke ridge with its fresh whiteness all to myself. Just me and this big old fir tree were there when the sun broke through the rushing clouds and warmed our backs. This could be many places in British Columbia in the winter and certainly took me on a memory meander around the province as I painted.

Details and purchase information HERE.

This last painting is so long and narrow for online viewing, let’s add a couple of detail images.

And this one as well…

Exposing The Mystery In An Ordinary Day

Recently Terrill Welch was asked what her art was about.

“I am a landscape painter, exposing the mystery in ordinary day” she replied, “want to see?”

With several large canvases prepped with grounds and underpaintings waiting for her in the winter studio and material being reworked for a new online teaching of oil painting classes starting early in the new year, a few moments were taken up with creating a short glimpse into Terrill’s work… so we can “see” what this Canadian landscape artist is doing. She will be thrilled if you take a second or two and watch the short video, leave a comment and share with others who might be interested. Enjoy!

The Terrill Welch Gallery is now closed until early April, except by appoint to visit the winter studio or her home studio. However, work is always available 24/7 in her online gallery. This has been a good year finding homes for paintings. So far, almost as many works left on adventures of their own as were released. However,  “available” works showing in the online gallery are current. So feel free to browse away HERE.

Also, beyond the showing of work in the Terrill Welch Gallery, there are two new solo exhibitions scheduled  for 2018 in public gallery spaces. If you are traveling in these areas of British Columbia or you are close by and want to make a special trip to see the work, specific details are below.

The first solo exhibition opening April 5th at The Station House Gallery in Williams Lake, British Columbia. The “Light of Place Exposed, Landscapes by Terrill Welch” show can be viewed in the main gallery until April 28th.

The second solo exhibition “Between Islands on the Salish Sea” will be at the Galiano Public Library on Galiano Island, British Columbia from September 10 to October 26, 2018.

Mayne Island Arbutus Trees and High Seas Paintings

Recent weeks have been productive, resulting in three new and two revisited works.

Northeasterly Morning Strait of Georgia Mayne Island BC – 20 x 40 inch oil on canvas. The cool winter light of early morning splashes with the waves in the high winds along the Strait of Georgia. Chilled to shivering, I stand transfixed. What if this were my last breath? Ah, but it would be a good one! View from Oyster Bay on Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada.

High Winds Strait of Georgia Mayne Island BC – 8 x 10 inch acrylic painting sketch. Some days there is a wild dance between the sea and the wind along the Strait of Georgia. A quick acrylic painting sketch simply to enjoy the interaction.

Update: February 25, 2016: This painting is now sold.

Late Afternoon Georgina Point Mayne Island BC – 8 x 10 inch acrylic sketch. I come back repeatedly to find the perfect day with the most perfect light. Is this it? A quick sketch to explore the quality of an early winter evening by the sea.

Late September Sun on Vulture Ridge Mayne Island BC – 11 x 14 inch plein air acrylic sketch. Plein air painting up on Henderson Hill at Vulture Ridge is a worthy climb on September 28, 2014. Unfortunate a small correction did not happen to this work until late December 2016, resulting it a lengthy delay in the painting sketch’s release. However, the freshness of that day has no expiry date.

Arbutus on Mt. Parke – 12 x 16 inch oil on canvas. Morning lifts heavy mist from the highest places while the sun dances cheek-to-cheek with the late October shadows. As these arbutus trees extend themselves in prayer, angels dissipate into the warmth gathering on top of the Mayne Island Mt. Parke ridge.

Catching Waves with New West Coast Painting Release

There is a brisk northwesterly wind stirring up the Salish Sea in the bright autumn sun. I step carefully down the sandstone trail to the shore below the lighthouse at Georgina Point. Looking out across the Strait of Georgia, it seems that the best thing to do is to catch a few waves.

Large Painting of Blooming Point PEI a meditation on World Peace

A painter can sometimes keep it simple and say that the painting painted itself. On occasion, this may even be the case. But not for this 40 x 60 inch canvas. It came with intentions that were sparked by a conversation with David Sandum, a Swedish painter and print maker living in Norway. He is also the author of the award-winning memoir I’ll Run Till the Sun Goes Down. We have been colleagues and friends for more than half a dozen years, or at least as much as one can be when living an ocean apart. The context for this painting was a dialogue following the latest in a series of terrorist attacks, this time it was Nice, France. The anger, bewilderment and confusion was felt bone deep. When one is a painter, there often seems to be only one thing that can be done in a situation like this – paint.  So, I made a commitment to do a painting while meditating about World Peace. My next work was a large seascape from my recent travels to Prince Edward Island. It seemed a fitting subject for this exercise. Here is the resulting canvas from  these painting meditations that took me several sessions….

In David Weale’s book, Whatever You Say – The talk of Islanders 1975-2005, he tells us about a mother on the North Shore of Prince Edward Island who use to warn her children to never to turn their back on the ocean. Upon finishing this painting, I believe we can also say “never turn your back on World Peace” because, like the sea, World Peace is unpredictable and, if we do not have one part of our being paying attention, at all times, we can find ourselves in real trouble. We imagine we know both the sea and World Peace. We believe we can navigate these every-changing landscapes without scars, tragedy and loss. But mostly, we only think we know our shadow selves, the dark side that is within each of us and part of the collective character of humanity. We fool ourselves into believing that the horror is from elsewhere, from an “other” that is separate from us. With every wave that meets the shore, the sea demonstrates how this is not so. The land and the sea are both part of the same whole, neither is constant, neither is willingly to give in to the other. Both are changed with each moment. Yet, for brief passages of time, we can gaze at the grand view and see what is possible. We may even be comfortable and turn away from our collective struggle between the separate parts of the same whole. We forget that the land can suddenly pushes up from forces far below the surface and displace the sea. We ignore that the sea can be tossed in vicious storms that tear at the cliffs and topple large chunks of red dirt and stone into the waters.  We tend to hang on, baffled by the interplay of our own contributions and those forces which we do not have any control. The concept of World Peace is possibly like this relationship between sea and land.

When we focus in on the details, we experience how the landscape disappears and can reshape itself into something much less recognizable.

What, at a distance, seemed solid and full of substance can become fluid, overlapping brushstrokes, loosely shaping the moving water and drifting sand dunes.

This painting is of an extraordinary place called Blooming Point in Prince Edward Island, Canada and it is a meditation about World Peace – holding the space, brush stroke by brush stroke, with all its complexities. Thank you David Sandum for your spark of inspiration and your frank thoughtfulness on this subject and so many others. This painting is dedicated to you.

Happy New Year with the best 15 paintings of 2015

It is here? Already? How sudden it seems to have come to close this fine painting year of 2015. In the studio or roaming the seaside, hillsides and trails, the artist’s brushes have done their thing, creating just over 50 original works including 28 oil paintings and 23 acrylic painting sketches. Some of these have been en plein air and others have been rendered from reference materials and memory. Regardless of their humble beginnings, each holds a short moment of a life lived. At first, only 10 works were going to be selected for the year-end roundup. But alas, the selection resisted such refinement. So here it goes, in no particular order, the artist’s selection of the best 15 paintings and painting sketches of 2015. Happy New Year! Enjoy!

In this 2015 year, a total of 25 original works has left the studio into private collections. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to highlight all of the paintings here that are loved and were purchased this year by a long and growing list of international collectors. What we DO have is a sampling of some of the best work of the 2015. In making selections, there is an attempt to represent major themes and interests of the artist as well as style trends in her work. Therefore, if you do not see your treasured painting in this list, it is not because it is not worthy of recognition. It is! And it is yours to enjoy everyday. Instead, see if you can find a painting that is similar in theme and style to the one you have on your “Terrill Welch original” art collection. It was a good year for painting and 15 is just too small a number to capture all the best works!

These paintings and painting sketches are not linked to a specific online gallery because there will be further changes in the months ahead about where work will be available. For now, the best option is to browse the online galleries listed below or contact the artist directly about a painting or painting sketch you are interested in purchasing.

Note from artist Terrill Welch:

This year would not have been possible without each of you! Your support, shout outs, cheering and collecting of paintings that inspire and connect with your own wishes and daily life are all part of the success these pieces have experienced. Thank you!  May you experience the richness of kindness, courage, love, curiosity and appreciation in abundance! All the best of 2016!
