Recent sales of Terrill Welch oil paintings and pending price increase

An artist is most often pleased when paintings find buyers and new homes. However, if an artist’s paintings sell too quickly it creates a kind of uncomfortable tension – at least for me anyway. I feel this certain kind of panic which is only addressed by painting more paintings. Take for example these resent three paintings that sold between Sunday and Sunday during the first week of August:

TULIPS SPRINGWATER DECK II a 20 x 16 inch oil painting that went to a collector in Saskatchewan Canada

Tulips Springwater Deck II by Terrill Welch 2013_05_03 008

and the pair of paintings going to a Victoria, British Columbia Canada collector

TULIPS SPRINGWATER DECK MAYNE ISLAND also 20 x 16 inches and the sister plein air painting to the studio work above

and

ACTIVE PASS SPRING MORNING 2013 – 16 x 20 inch oil on canvas

Active Pass Spring Morning 2013 16 x 20 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 2013_04_19 047

For a painter such as myself, who isn’t particularly prolific with only somewhere between 60 and 70 finished paintings in a year, this frequency of sales for midsized paintings causes me to become anxious. I have one of two choices. I can paint more paintings each week or I can raise my prices. Since I am already working full-time between my photography and painting you can guess which it shall be.

Please note: During the first week of October, the prices on my original paintings will increase for the second time this year.

I know this is hard for those who have my work on your wishlist. I am also fully aware that my paintings are often double the price of other emerging artists. My work is pricy no matter which reference a buyer is to consider. However, my original paintings are always going to be in limited supply for a whole combinations of reasons. I am not a painting factory. I paint as part of my very personal creative process and share the results through the sale of my work. Yet, I would still like my fans, supporters and collectors to have the option to enjoy my work in some form. Here are two examples of affordable options that were purchases by buyers this week:

Thank you to the many admirers of both my painting and my photography. Your ongoing support in so many different ways is greatly appreciated.

For those who will be in Sidney British Columbia between September 3rd and 30th I will, at their request, have a few of my paintings hanging in the Island Blue Sidney Art Store. if you like, drop in for a first hand browse.

All the best of today to you!

Seaside Mayne Island oil painting study by Terrill Welch

The evening light is fading as I sidestep my own long shadow to enjoy the view of the shore and sea. This small 10 x 8 inch oil on canvas study is part of my reference work for a large 60 x 36 inch oil on canvas of this scene. The large canvas underpainting is waiting for me to move forward and this small study is egging me on. Yet, it is also time for it to set out on a home of its own as I begin to muse about other paintings that will eventually take its place in my small home studio.

Sold – End of Day with Arbutus – Contemporary Canadian Landscape Painting

There are times when paintings find their new homes before the paint is dry. Such is the case with this 8 x 10 inch oil on canvas END OF DAY WITH ARBUTUS completed four days ago. Packaged carefully to protect the still-tacky surface the painting is on its way to a new collector in British Columbia, Canada. The buyer had been waiting for months watching for “their” painting to come off my easel. It finally happened. Love at first sight. This painting was sold before it could be release officially here or in the Artsy Home online gallery.

If you would like to follow my work-in-progress and be in a position to purchase paintings as they are in their “resting” state before their official release friend me on Facebook , follow me on Twitter, circle me on G+ and subscribe to my work-in-progress Creative Potager Blog  or any combination of these social media platforms you find yourself frequenting.

END OF DAY WITH ARBUTUS 8 x 10 oil on canvas

My comments as I set this painting aside to “rest” on four days ago….The body and weight of the evening light just before it dipped over the far hill was enchanting. The eyes were doing tricks as they saw into the shadows and recognized the reflected light. It was a bit of a Kandinsky (Russian Painter) moment where in a fleeting decision I dipped into the light blue to trap the last of the light onto my canvas – a wrong colour that felt just right. I liked it then and I like it now.

The Mt. Baker Reach – west coast seascape study

There is something about coming to the Mayne Island shore and seeing Mount Baker across the Strait of Georgia that is like magic. No photograph seems to adequately capture my surprise and delight so I took the task to my canvas instead.

Plein Air Painting From Felix Jack Road Mayne Island

A view that surprises as the viewer emerges from thick forested road. I pondered and mused until one morning I just through my easel and paints in the back of Red Rosie, drove over and parked on the side of the road to paint.

New Growth West Coast in late May – Canadian landscape oil painting

The winter and spring rains have left both moss, salal and trees dressed in new frocks of vibrant green. It won’t last. As summer progresses the new growth will harden off and become dull and crunchy in the summer’s heat. Today though – we celebrate!

This painting is now in a private collection.

My painterly goal is to bring the viewer into the landscape so it is experienced rather than observed. The method of doing this varies from one painting to another but the necessity to do so never wavers. In this painting, I want viewers to feel the soft earth under their feet. Breathe the damp freshness of a rain that is not quite complete. Touch the tender new growth as if their eyes are closed. Smell the pungent salt of the sea lapping against their inner ear… all the while in mid-step, slightly off balance as the mechanisms of the eye and brain scramble for clarity in a driving need to still the body’s surrounds – a driving need to liberate the viewer from within the landscape. My painting challenge is to keep the viewer experiencing the landscape from within for as long as possible.
