The Work Of Art

Yesterday, following a rocky ferry ride, a power outage and in the mids of winds and heavy rain, business woman, Katrina Elliot and I slipped into the Terrill Welch Gallery. A painting had been set aside months ago, waiting for her final review and consideration. She said “yes!”

Happy Art Collector

You see, like people, my paintings have work to do. My paintings are not just a pretty face to dangle on your wall for others to admire or an accessory to balance or decorate a room. In fact, many collectors of my paintings hang the work in their bedrooms where few see them but the intended viewer. So, what is this important work that these paintings do?

Well, like Katrina, many “Terrill Welch collectors” are leaders in fields that they are passionate about – it is demanding work, meaningful work. The risks are often high and the learning curves steep because these individuals continually reach for what is just at the edge of their ability, simply because the positive outcomes for change, in individual lives and in community, are great. It is work that will matter ten years and even a hundred years from now. These individuals give everything they have and then find that extra 10 percent. In these situations, my paintings frequently provide a focus for reflection, a chance to regroup and build resilience, an opportunity to dream and problem-solve. They provide confirmation that you are enough – just as you are. Finally and most importantly – hope. The paintings are a touchstone and buffer. They are a reminder of our ability to endure and navigate significant losses and the trials we all must face in living a full life, one that is well lived.

We know this because firstly, it is the spirit in which the work is created and secondly, the paintings have been doing this work for so long that they excel in their partnership with the viewer to accomplish these tasks. In fact, Katrina attended and purchased her first work from my very first solo gallery show back in the mid 1990’s. Sadly, this initial painting was lost in a flood a few years ago. In 2016, wanting to replace the painting, Katrina did a google searched for me and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then she has carefully and thoughtfully added works to her “Terrill Welch collection” and I do trust and hope that these paintings will work as rigorously and hard as she does. The biggest bonus for me is that we have rekindled a friendship that now spans almost 25 years. The paintings consider this their valued-added contribution to the bottom line of life and community. The paintings can never guarantee this outcome but it is always a welcomed deliverable. As a painter, I think I love my work almost as much as the collectors and the paintings do! After all, we all have work we must do, that we cannot bare to walk away from or leave only half completed.

So, let us congratulate “Centuries of Seasons – Heritage Road, P.E.I.” on finding the perfect home and Katrina Elliot on her new stewardship of this work. May they both thrive, give their best and always know how much they are appreciated.

Oil painting of Prince Edward Island Heritage Road showing all four seasons starting with winter, then autumn, summer and finally spring in the distance.
Centuries of Seasons Heritage Road PEI by Canadian Artist Terrill Welch

Painter’s notes about “Centuries of Seasons – Heritage Road, P.E.I.” 24 x 30 inch walnut oil on wood…

Centuries of Seasons might be said to have begun on a drive down the Currie Heritage Road on Prince Edward Island, Canada in May 2016.

It might be said that I only trust my brushes today and not my own words and convictions. This is true, though it is not uncommon, I would think, to seek the experience of wise counsel when processing ones own experiences.

It might be said too that I have begun with the first trees I ever painted. This likely is equally true because to know a tree well enough to paint it is to spend years in its company.

It might be said that the centuries of seasons in this painting have no beginning and no ending. This too is true as we can observe that the road has worn away from years of passage over its red dirt surface.

Regardless of what might be said, this is where the painting has come to rest with its centuries of seasons.

Trees: As we breathe with West Coast Canadian Artist Terrill Welch

Large oil paintings of trees, mostly arbutus trees,  grace the walls of the Terrill Welch Gallery from Friday, May 18, 2018 to Sunday, July 23, 2018. A very few smaller plein air sketches and studies provide balance and perspective to these larger canvases.

Trees: As we breathe is an invitation, a reminder to our human connect to trees for our very breath. Rendered in each brushstroke is Canadian west coast landscape artist Terrill Welch’s passion and pure pleasure in trees.

The paintings are about the elegance of this often forgotten relationship as we race towards deadlines, commitments, dreams, goals and personal expectations for human achievement.

This show is about giving a nod, taking a pause and being like the trees we so rely on for life. This show is about love, beauty and aging in place. This show is about loss, companionship and spirals of time.

The paintings in this show can be viewed in the online gallery collection by the same name “Trees: As we breathe” HERE.

Directions to visit (along with days and hours open) the Terrill Welch Gallery in-person are available HERE.

Opening the season at the Terrill Welch Gallery is a two artist international exhibition, April 13 — May 13, 2018 on Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada.

Earth & Water: A Conversation on Edge with Terrill Welch and Elena Maslova-Levin

Sixteen landscapes. A multitude of conversations.

The timeless conversation between Earth and Water, shaping the edges of continents and islands we inhabit.

The conversation between the observer and the observed, shaping our visible reality.

And between the artist and nature, from which paintings emerge and invite the spectator to take part in the conversation.

And finally, the conversation between artists, in words and in paintings — an ongoing exchange of insights and impressions, challenges and breakthroughs.

Preview all sixteen paintings and learn more about the artists and the show HERE.

Also, a short video of the show is now available for your viewing pleasure.

On Friday, April 13th Elena Maslova-Levin and Terrill Welch will do a live video chat from the Art of Terrill Welch Facebook Page at 11:00 am PDT to open the show.

Light of Place Exposed Landscapes By Terrill Welch

Each place and each moment has its own light and to expose this everyday mystery is something that is often behind the brush marks of Canadian artist Terrill Welch. She has twenty landscape oil paintings that will be traveling up the province of British Columbia to be shown in the Williams Lake public gallery during the month of April, 2018.

A Tall Tale of Autumn Stuart River 16 x 12 inch oil on canvas is the poster painting for this show and you can preview all twenty paintings in the solo exhibition at her online gallery HERE.

Solo exhibition “Light of Place Exposed, Landscapes by Terrill Welch” can be viewed in the main gallery at The Station House Gallery in Williams Lake, British Columbia from Thursday, April 5th to Saturday, April 28th of 2018.

In the Williams Lake Tribune – “Light ripples through the Station House Gallery” by Tara Sprickerhoff April 11, 2018

How to get to The Station House Gallery: To get to the gallery is straightforward. The address is 1 Mackenzie Ave N., Williams Lake, B.C. and if you are coming from the north or south, just take the main Oliver street right into downtown from the four way stop on the highway and drive to the end where it meets Mackenzie Ave Noth. The gallery will be directly in front of you. However, if you like circle routes when you are traveling , turn at Mackenzie Ave N. if coming in from the north and drive into Williams Lake on this street until you get to Oliver Street. The Station House Gallery will be on your Right. You can then take Oliver Street to meet up with the highway south again. Of course if you are coming from the south it is the same in reverse.

Terrill Welch will be present for the opening of the exhibition on the evening of Thursday April 5, 2018 starting at 5:00 pm and she will say a few more words about the show then.

Pre-sales are welcomed by either the Terrill Welch Gallery or The Station House Gallery. All sold work will be shipped, delivered or available for pick up at the end of the exhibition.

Still and Not So Still Life show at the Terrill Welch Gallery

A summer harvest of colour. “Happy paintings!” visitors keep saying with bold sunflowers, plump golden plums, red tumbling pears, gestural roses and more catching the light across oil painted canvases.

These works by landscape painter Terrill Welch are seldom shown. Her rolling seas, curving arbutus and stoic towering fir trees are much better known to us. However, with the Terrill Welch Gallery we have pulled together this still life body of work for your viewing pleasure.

The “Still and Not So Still Life” show will be up from Sept 1 – and extended to Oct 1, 2017. A video preview of the show is available on Youtube at:

There is also a guest painting by Elena Maslova-Levin displayed in a place of honour in this show. “Dancing Pears” is a 9 x 12 inch oil on linen canvas board and the first painting that Terrill Welch added by this artist to her private collection. This cameo appearance is the only beginning of the gallery’s sharing of Maslova-Levin’s work with a more extensive show anticipated in April 2018 with the artist visiting the gallery in person from the San Francisco Bay Area in California.

More about Elena Maslova-Levin (Lena Levin) and her work is available HERE.

West to East Coast Canadian Landscapes in Paint solo exhibition

Canadian landscape painter Terrill Welch’s solo exhibition “West to East Coast Canadian Landscapes in Paint” opens June 30th 3-5 pm and closes on August 13th 5 pm 2017. If you are an art lover who is fond of landscapes that are alive with movement and a sense of place, this is an exhibition you will want to be sure to take in this summer.

This show is inspired by Canada 150 celebrations and Terrill’s recent travels from the southwest coast of Canada to paint on Prince Edward Island for seven weeks last spring. The contrast between the light and colour of these two coasts is most evident in this work. The paintings promise a sensory connection to land, sea and sky from one Canadian coast to the other.

With 24 works showing in a variety of sizes from very large to small painting sketches there is something for everyone to enjoy. Mayne Island, British Columbia is one of the Southern Gulf Islands and is easy to reach from either Vancouver or Victoria. Save the image below to your phone and you will have everything you need to know about the show. If you need help with figuring out how to get here, just ask and we can assist.

Browse works showing in the online gallery ahead of time HERE. Pre-sales are welcome.
