Canadian Landscape Artist Terrill Welch Paints Montagne Sainte-Victoire

Canadian landscape artist, Terrill Welch, renders a contemporary modern-day classic of Cezanne’s Mountain morning and evening. The story begins when the artist travels to Europe in the spring of 2014 and finds herself on the painters’ ground in Aix-en-Provence.

The resulting work from this experience are two 18 x 24 inch oil on canvas paintings completed back in Terrill Welch’s studio on Mayne Island off the southwest coast of Canada. One painting is of Cezanne’s Montagne Sainte-Victoire in the morning and the other in the evening.

Though this complimentary pair or diptych illuminate each other and together comprise a distinct piece of art, they are available separately.

The story of the artist’s climb to the painters’ gound, being accidentally photographed by a professional photographer and completing a 20 minute plein air acrylic sketch for later reference, along with a handful of photographs, is told in her Creative Potager post “Aix en Provence with Cezanne and photographer Mme Miceli Brigitte on the Painters Ground

Storm Watching – large contemporary seascape

The continuous motion of the winds and the sea stir sea-spray high up onto the cliffs above. I want that. I want that feeling of stirring and motion. With as few brushstrokes as possible on this large canvas, I want us to be slightly queasy from it as we are swayed in the waters and crash against the rocks within our viewing of this painting.

Contemporary as this painting is, if J.M.W. Turner (1775 – 1851) comes to mind you can be forgiven because, without any reference to the artist in my original post, his name appeared on the recommended tag list. I have therefore included a few links to his work in the related articles section below for your reading pleasure.

Also, there is a detailed in-progress post on my Creative Potager blog  HERE which includes reference images from my photography shoot that inspired this painting.

UPDATED OCTOBER 13, 2014:  Short video (less than six minutes) where Terrill Welch talks about this painting and the intentions behind her work.

A Tall Tale of Autumn – contemporary landscape painting

On this Christmas Eve day off the southwest coast of Canada it seems the right painting to share and release as it is fa work filled with memories.

A TALL TALE OF AUTUMN STUART RIVER – 16 x 12 inch oil on canvas

A Tall Tale of Autumn Stuart River 16 x 12 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 2013_12_24 003

These are my childhood trees – popular trees growing on the riverbank. They are my first subject of paintings. I cannot pick up a brush to render them without being transported back through time with its many stops before these trees. These are trees I met before there was even a field in front of them. These are trees I introduced my first lover and later others. Then much later my now husband. These are trees I walked beside while I carried my babies and then with them while they carried theirs. These are the trees that my mother and father have walked with me since they were younger than I am today. Painting the spaces of light and shadow in between is filled with the residue of many visits. It is a tall tale that gets taller with each telling. All I intended to do was to use up the paint leftover on the palette.

Farm In Fog – pastoral landscape painting

Loosely referencing a Mayne Island farm, this painting of west coast fog  stirs our imagination. There is a sense that if we look away the fog will have enveloped the whole scene leaving us with only grey shadows of shapes. The distant ferry whistle might sound as it enters Active Pass and we will peer into the place that was visible only seconds before, waiting.

The painting is oil on gessobord with a two-inch wood cradle. No frame is necessary. The hanging wire is attached and it is ready to place on the wall.

Arbutus on Mt. Parke – landscape oil painting

Morning lifts heavy mist from the highest places while the sun dances cheek-to-cheek with the late October shadows. As these arbutus trees extend themselves in prayer, angels dissipate into the warmth gathering on top of the Mayne Island Mt. Parke ridge.

Chasing October Sun by the Sea – an en plein air oil painting

There is a warm October sun down by the sea. We stay and watch as it drifts along the shore. No regrets.

Canadian Contemporary Landscape Painting Rhythm of the Sea Edith Point Released

Completed in late March 2013, this painting has been slow to release for purchase by Canadian contemporary landscape painter, Terrill Welch. For all its gray-scale rendering this painting is anything but neutral. The sea rolls forward onto the shore. Trees tingle from the day’s sun while the rocks release their summer heat as the water charges across their surface. I am there. You are there. The salt spray is moist on our skin and the rhythm of the sea matches our breath, our heartbeat, and answers a call to all that is knowable.

SOLD The Mt. Baker Reach Canadian landscape painting

There is something about coming to the Mayne Island shore and seeing Mount Baker across the Strait of Georgia that is like magic. No photograph seems to adequately capture my surprise and delight so I took the task to my canvas instead.

Recent sales of Terrill Welch oil paintings and pending price increase

An artist is most often pleased when paintings find buyers and new homes. However, if an artist’s paintings sell too quickly it creates a kind of uncomfortable tension – at least for me anyway. I feel this certain kind of panic which is only addressed by painting more paintings. Take for example these resent three paintings that sold between Sunday and Sunday during the first week of August:

TULIPS SPRINGWATER DECK II a 20 x 16 inch oil painting that went to a collector in Saskatchewan Canada

Tulips Springwater Deck II by Terrill Welch 2013_05_03 008

and the pair of paintings going to a Victoria, British Columbia Canada collector

TULIPS SPRINGWATER DECK MAYNE ISLAND also 20 x 16 inches and the sister plein air painting to the studio work above

ACTIVE PASS SPRING MORNING 2013 – 16 x 20 inch oil on canvas

Active Pass Spring Morning 2013 16 x 20 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 2013_04_19 047

For a painter such as myself, who isn’t particularly prolific with only somewhere between 60 and 70 finished paintings in a year, this frequency of sales for midsized paintings causes me to become anxious. I have one of two choices. I can paint more paintings each week or I can raise my prices. Since I am already working full-time between my photography and painting you can guess which it shall be.

Please note: During the first week of October, the prices on my original paintings will increase for the second time this year.

I know this is hard for those who have my work on your wishlist. I am also fully aware that my paintings are often double the price of other emerging artists. My work is pricy no matter which reference a buyer is to consider. However, my original paintings are always going to be in limited supply for a whole combinations of reasons. I am not a painting factory. I paint as part of my very personal creative process and share the results through the sale of my work. Yet, I would still like my fans, supporters and collectors to have the option to enjoy my work in some form. Here are two examples of affordable options that were purchases by buyers this week:

Thank you to the many admirers of both my painting and my photography. Your ongoing support in so many different ways is greatly appreciated.

For those who will be in Sidney British Columbia between September 3rd and 30th I will, at their request, have a few of my paintings hanging in the Island Blue Sidney Art Store. if you like, drop in for a first hand browse.

All the best of today to you!
