At times, global and personal events in 2023 have left many of us feeling shattered. We may find it difficult to celebrate our wins because our sense of loss can feel greater. However, there are those of us that are tasked with challenging the most difficult of moments through art. Terrill Welch is one of those artist who paints her way through adversity in an attempt to offer hope and possibility for us all. This is how she lives and shows up in the world. 


Each painting year is unique with its own special moments and significant points of celebration. In 2023, Terrill released 30 new paintings and 20 paintings from her inventory of available artwork were acquired by art collectors. Of the 30 new paintings in 2023, Terrill has chosen 12 to represent her best work of the year. Many of these 12 paintings have been completed since September of 2023 and are fresh off of the artist’s easel.


A special thank you to our many art collectors who have purchased paintings in 2023 Your patronage is deeply appreciated! Thank you also to the many serious fans of Terrill Welch’s paintings who have shared her work with family and friends and even strangers. Without your supportive efforts such a broad range of international connections and conversations wouldn’t be possible.

We wish each and every one of you all the very best of the holidays as we hold space for peace and, as always, do what we can.

Last evening my husband, David, and I went to see the lights at our Mayne Island Japanese Memorial Garden. I thought I would share a few memory images with you as my way of adding a little magic to your holidays. This garden has been designed and is maintained and continually developed by volunteers supported through donations. I love coming here any time of year but particularly when the lights are up during the winter holidays.

I find the child in me waking up with wonder in her heart. ❤️

So much care has been taken to enhance the natural beauty of this garden during these sparkly evenings.

The newly painted red bridge couldn’t possibly look any better. Thank you to everyone who is involved in making this special Mayne Island experience happen! Amazing! 

If you happen to be on Mayne Island between now and January 1st, it is worth taking a walk through our magical Mayne Island Japanese Memorial Garden. Open nightly by donation (weather permitting) between 5-7 pm.

Wherever you are, no matter how challenging times may be, I hope you can find a tiny glimpse of magic in an ordinary day.

Introducing Just Art Calendar 2024

UPDATE APRIL 2024: “Just Art Calendar” has been renamed “Feature Painting for (Month Year)”. The impetus for the name change is to more accurately indicate what you are receiving in the email (with no mention of what you might be missing since we have stopped producing calendars 😉).

We are piloting a new idea for 2024. Our relationships with calendars has changed over the years. Most of us now use electronic calendars. Still, we love the art that comes with the more traditional hardcopy calendar where each new month brings with it an image of another artwork. However, galloping inflation has vigorously impacted the printing and shipping costs of such calendars. So we came up with a solution to bring you the best part of our art calendar as a gift! What if we sent all Terrill Welch newsletter subscribers an email with the featured “Terrill Welch painting” on the first day of each month? We think this idea just might become a highly valued addition to your subscription. And there is more…

BONUS: Paid subscription holders to “Terrill Welch by herself” can also request one higher resolution image of a painting that is featured in the Just Art Calendar 2024, at anytime during the calendar year. This image can then be used to purchase a print in a format of their choice at a local print shop for the requester’s personal use. Each request will come with a limited license giving permission for this specific purpose.

Eight New Terrill Welch Landscape Paintings Just Released

My hand grips the pliers to loosen the lid on a tube of French Ultramarine and I squeeze it liberally into a mound on the upper left hand side of my palette. It has been a productive month and there has been a lot of squeezing of various pigments suspended in walnut oil. Each of these paintings has a story and the landscapes are all significant and intimately familiar to me. The results are satisfying and I am ready to share them with you. 


Our Mayne Island fall tour is again happening this year. It is a weather-dependent event for day visitors from Vancouver Island and Vancouver but still a great day of island meandering if you are game for an adventure. 


The Agriculture Hall and our Community Centre both will be bursting with artist and makers as well as many open studios and small galleries to browse. I will have the gallery pod open an extra hour early for the studio tour days starting 10-4 on Friday November 10th and finishing Sunday November 12th. I will have a few studio tour maps available and my regular studio signs will be up so you can find your way. Also, the paintings in the gallery pod will be available for viewing online as usual. Come on by and say “hello” and, with a bit of luck, on the Saturday and Sunday I will also be able to invite you into the house to see the studio area and additional work on show in our home.

An Art Collector’s Joy

This week, these two Terrill Welch paintings are winging their way to a special home in Alberta, Canada. With gratitude, we offer congratulations to the art collector who is celebrating a milestone as she reaches towards her vision! When we asked the art collector about their selection of these two paintings, they replied that they were following their joy. Doesn’t that make you smile? 

SOLD – “Wabi Sabi Alley in Venice” by Terrill Welch, 20 x 16 inch oil on canvas.

Artist notes: Finding a quiet alley in Venice is not as easy as one might think. But over somewhere around the big fish market and then just a few more twist and turns and we are here. Window shutters slap open to the late morning while the clicking of shoes echo into the distance. The warmth softly radiates back to us off of the brick walls where the deep shade is still cool and welcoming. Venetia Italia, how many have wander into this wabi sabi alley of yours?

SOLD – “Future Fragments Study” by Terrill Welch, 10 x 8 inch acrylic and oil on gessobord.

Artist notes: I walked and wondered about what will remain as future fragments to rebuild upon? Will there be another fragile sense of wholeness and interwoven harmony? What did it feel like then? What does it feel like now? Are any bits reusable?

Published on the 3rd Friday of each month “Terrill Welch by herself” is a new adventure in this paid subscription that accompanies my free “A Brush with Life” that is published on the 1st Friday of each month.

In addition to first access to many of my paintings, there are often stories, behind the scenes observation about my painting practice, sections on what I am watching and reading and anything else that seems important to share in my creative world.

It is a way to read my original content and learn about my original paintings without screen interruption or distractions. In this way, ”Terrill Welch By herself” is more like an eclectic book with pop-ups than anything else. I love curating and publishing each issue of both publications but “Terrill Welch by herself” has that extra rare undefinable something in its process.

West Coast Sea Escape Show

As the spring days really begin, we have a new “West Coast Sea Escape” show with paintings by Terrill Welch in the Terrill Welch Gallery Pod, OPEN DAILY 11-4 with extended hours 10-4 for the Made on Mayne Spring Tour April 7th – 8th at 428 Luff Rd, Mayne Island B.C. We look forward to your visits both online and in person to enjoy these seascape paintings that are showing until May 17, 2023 in our unique gallery pod in the woods.

Slipping out to the gallery pod every morning, we make sure everything is ready for your self browsing visit. If we are available, we do come out and say “hello”. However, the gallery pod is designed for walk in viewing and you are encouraged to go in and explore the art on your own. There are lists of artwork, QR codes to request purchase and telephone numbers to text or call for assistance.


The seascape painting “China Beach in Late February” on the top right is new and this is its first time being in a show. China Beach is on the southwest tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia.


We are thrilled to have the large 40 x 60 inch seascape painting of Active Pass anchoring this show across the back of the gallery pod. The city seascape to its right is a newer painting interpreting a location in the Victoria B.C. area. 


These landscape paintings of the sea remind us of our constant relationship with both continuity and change with beginnings and endings overlapping in endless rhythms.

BEYOND New Group Show

From 10 – 5 Thursday to Monday, February 7, 2023 to April 17, 2023 the ISLAND TIME ART room at 492 Dalton Road on Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada will present “Beyond” with original paintings of various sizes by Jody Waldie, Jennifer Peers, Glenda King, Maeva Lightheart and Terrill Welch. In this diverse show, most of these recent paintings are slightly beyond the usual expressions for each painter with many leaning towards abstraction and one towards extreme realism. These works are outliers or works from the margins of these artists which are being given space to be seen and appreciated.

Featuring Mayne Island Landscape Paintings

We are starting to stir out of our winter cozy season by featuring Mayne Island Landscape paintings by Terrill Welch in our unique gallery pod in the woods at 428 Luff Rd, Mayne Island BC. No arrangements or appointments are necessary. We are boldly going forward with DAILY OPEN hours from 11-4 everyday starting today, January 22, 2023. Since our Terrill Welch Gallery Pod has the option of walk in self-browsing with a QR card for purchase links in our online gallery, we can do this! So we are! There is a phone number for additional assistance and Terrill will come say “hello” in person if she is available. Either way, stay as long as you like and enjoy the paintings.

Best 12 out of 32 New Terrill Welch Paintings in 2022

Each year I like to review which are my best paintings painted and released in that calendar year. Sometimes this selection is easy and other times it can be more challenging to decide. This is a more challenging review of 32 new paintings in 2022 with a wider range than usual of approaches. However, a decision has been made! I ended up choosing 10 paintings, including a diptych, and one bonus painting. (So there are 12 separate canvases in total)

Please note that many of these paintings have already sold and are in private collections. However there are still a few excellent works to choose from and, with a bit of luck, more will be coming available in 2023.
