Recently Sold Paintings by Contemporary Artist Terrill Welch

On this December 1st of 2019, we pause to reflect on the success of the Art of Terrill Welch Gallery during this past art season. The small seasonal gallery, with a year-round online presence, has had a good year. In fact, the best year so far! By the end of September this year, Terrill Welch had painted and released 23 new contemporary landscape paintings and 17 works had sold from her inventory of original works. Before a price increase takes effect next week, we thought we would share five of our favourite oil paintings that are now in the homes of art collectors and offer you the chance to browse the online gallery of current works still available.

Between Here and There with Contemporary Landscape Painter Terrill Welch

From May 17th to July 7, 2019 Canadian contemporary landscape paintings from north central to the southwest coast of British Columbia will be showing at the Terrill Welch Gallery on Mayne Island. This solo exhibition is about a painter’s life that is lived in the landscape of a province rather than a city or village. From plein air painting at her parents’ farm on the Stuart River to the first leaves on the poplar trees in the Cariboo or the smoky skies near Cache Creek and all the way to linger along the islands next to the Strait of Georgia and then further to a sunset on Chesterman Beach near Tofino, her brushes move paint swiftly and precisely across the canvases. British Columbia is a diverse landscape that is explored within the integrity of place through the vision and impressions of one painter – Terrill Welch.

From the richness of light through the rainforest canopy to an arbutus tree reaching over the edge of a cliff, you will be there, standing shoulder to shoulder with the painter inside the landscape.

Exposing The Mystery In An Ordinary Day

Recently Terrill Welch was asked what her art was about.

“I am a landscape painter, exposing the mystery in ordinary day” she replied, “want to see?”

With several large canvases prepped with grounds and underpaintings waiting for her in the winter studio and material being reworked for a new online teaching of oil painting classes starting early in the new year, a few moments were taken up with creating a short glimpse into Terrill’s work… so we can “see” what this Canadian landscape artist is doing. She will be thrilled if you take a second or two and watch the short video, leave a comment and share with others who might be interested. Enjoy!

The Terrill Welch Gallery is now closed until early April, except by appoint to visit the winter studio or her home studio. However, work is always available 24/7 in her online gallery. This has been a good year finding homes for paintings. So far, almost as many works left on adventures of their own as were released. However,  “available” works showing in the online gallery are current. So feel free to browse away HERE.

Also, beyond the showing of work in the Terrill Welch Gallery, there are two new solo exhibitions scheduled  for 2018 in public gallery spaces. If you are traveling in these areas of British Columbia or you are close by and want to make a special trip to see the work, specific details are below.

The first solo exhibition opening April 5th at The Station House Gallery in Williams Lake, British Columbia. The “Light of Place Exposed, Landscapes by Terrill Welch” show can be viewed in the main gallery until April 28th.

The second solo exhibition “Between Islands on the Salish Sea” will be at the Galiano Public Library on Galiano Island, British Columbia from September 10 to October 26, 2018.

Happy New Year with the best 7 paintings of 2016

In 2016, there are 24 oil paintings and 32 acrylic painting sketches for a total of 56 completed works by the Canadian artist Terrill Welch. Many of these oil paintings are larger canvases and cover specific geographical areas of both the west and east coast of Canada. Most of the painting sketches were completed during a spring seven-week art trip to Prince Edward Island and remain unavailable in the artist’s private studio collection. In total, 30 paintings or painting sketches were released in 2016 and overall 15 works from the available pieces left Terrill’s studio into private collection.

The selection for the best paintings of 2016 is limited to an arbitrary number of seven works because choosing 16 for 2016 out of a total of 56 works just didn’t seem to create enough of a meaningful selection process. So here it goes, in no particular, order, the artist’s choice of the seven best paintings 2016.

Garry Oaks viewed from Brown Ridge – Canadian landscape painting

These muted hues have endurance and awe brushed into their presence. So often painters seem to feel the need to resist the gray and brown and heaviness of our southwest Canadian rainforest. This is a mistake because there is beauty to explore in these melancholy landscapes. There is fuel to feed our own inner strength. We need not brush it over with artificial colour. We need only to seeking deeply into the hues and hold this wonder on our canvas. These are this artist’s musings as Terrill Welch worked on this oil painting inspired by a resent hike when the mist was rolling along the ridge, the air damp on her skin and her body warm from her steps.

GARRY OAKS ON BROWN RIDGE 14 x 18 inch oil on canvas

Garry Oaks on Brown Ridge 14 x 18 inch oil on canvas contemporary Canadian landscape art by Terrill Welch 2014_09_15 025

Following the goat paths where the Garry Oaks lean into Brown Ridge on Saturna Island is a beautiful sight. We must stop before looking up from our feet and out over the inside passage towards Saltspring and Vancouver Island. Contemporary Canadian landscape art is eminently present in this view.

A few words from the painter:

Painting the spaces in between whilst keeping ones visual balance to capture the feeling of being high on Saturna Island’s Brown Ridge is a challenge that this landscape painter is prepared to breathe life into. The intention is to allow the viewer’s eye to escape the edges of the canvas and find themselves imbedded within the view. But not comfortably. I desired that sense of wanting to look, feeling the wisps of sea air in our ears while we steady ourselves on the narrow path. I wanted the painting to be saturated with not quite clear emotions of awe, wonder and eternal loss. This may be a tall order for one relatively small canvas but I had to give it my best didn’t I?

Canadian Landscape Artist Terrill Welch Paints Montagne Sainte-Victoire

Canadian landscape artist, Terrill Welch, renders a contemporary modern-day classic of Cezanne’s Mountain morning and evening. The story begins when the artist travels to Europe in the spring of 2014 and finds herself on the painters’ ground in Aix-en-Provence.

The resulting work from this experience are two 18 x 24 inch oil on canvas paintings completed back in Terrill Welch’s studio on Mayne Island off the southwest coast of Canada. One painting is of Cezanne’s Montagne Sainte-Victoire in the morning and the other in the evening.

Though this complimentary pair or diptych illuminate each other and together comprise a distinct piece of art, they are available separately.

The story of the artist’s climb to the painters’ gound, being accidentally photographed by a professional photographer and completing a 20 minute plein air acrylic sketch for later reference, along with a handful of photographs, is told in her Creative Potager post “Aix en Provence with Cezanne and photographer Mme Miceli Brigitte on the Painters Ground

Painting The Vitality of West Coast Grey Landscapes

This July morning has arrived with a heaviness in the west coast grey that seems to be promising rain as the building wind flaps through the clothes left on the line overnight. You may think this would be a non-inspiration kind of day for a painter. But I find the opposite to be true. This kind of morning often has my hands itching to reach for the brushes and to set a canvas on the studio easel. But today there is no time. I have a birthday dinner this evening and a full day of studio visits to host tomorrow. So this is what I offer you instead: a collection of six of my grey paintings that are available for purchase…

Reef Bay Morning Experienced – 14 x 18 inch oil on canvas

I remember the sea, and the soft rush of water as it comes ashore. I remember the heaviness of the rocks and the salty dampness of winter seaweed. I feel the coolness of the air and the cry of the gulls.Alla prima or wet-on-wet seascape painting with the quiet strength that is part of any peaceful west coast day

Between Land and Sea Begging the Sky to Intervene – 9 x 12 inch oil on canvas

The heavy grey seems like a bag of stones pulling, pushing and squishing me between land and sea as I beg the sky to intervene. Have you been there?

Fog Inside Passage – 12 x 24 inch oil on canvas

Winter fog in the southern gulf islands is often dense and close to the sea. Islands appear and disappear as the ferries take passengers through the inside passage. The mysterious landscape has a beauty that is hard to know unless one lives with it for the long winter months of off-season quiet.

And finally, the jewel of west coast grey in my collection…

Rhythm of the Sea Edith Point – 20 x 40 inch oil on canvas

The sea rolls forward onto the shore. Trees tingle from the day’s sun while the rocks release their summer heat as the water charges across their surface. I am there. You are there. The salt spray is moist on our skin and the rhythm of the sea matches our breath, our heartbeat, and answers a call to all that is knowable.

First Brush with Europe painting – Morning by Pont d’ Avignon

There have been no posts here for a while as the artist was traveling and painting sketches in Europe from the beginning of April until the end of June. However, I am back in the studio and more new work shall become available again. Here is the first…

Morning by Pont d’ Avignon – 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas
Morning by Pont d' Avignon 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 2014_07_03 150

The Pont d’ Avignon or Pont Saint-Bénézet once had 22 arches. The bridge was eventually abandon as the arches took too much upkeep due to being damaged when the Rhone river would flood. The four remaining arches are believed to have been built around 1345. The bridge was the inspiration for the song Sur le pont d’Avignon. The subject for this work began with a plein air sketch while I was standing on the riverbank on an early morning in June of 2014 in Avignon France.
