Blackberries Golden Plums Transparent Apple Still Life Painting

For much of the past couple of months I have been absorbed in the work of Richard Diebenkorn, anAmerican abstract expressionist, and that of Cezanne and Matisse. Painting seems to be primarily about light and colour for me, not in the absence of form but form most often plays second violin – holding the composition together without any solo parts. The days of light, seasons, colour, form and space collide within my ordered and defined sensory system. Not chaos. No not that. Only adjustments and a release from specifics. Blackberries and golden plums are my favourites. The transparent apples just happen to ripen at the same time adding a nice shape and colour for balancing a still life plate.

Update November 14, 2014: This painting is now Sold! Detailed viewing  and purchase information for other original paintings by Terrill Welch HERE.

Blackberries do not keep for very long on a plate so I took the time to also do a few photography reference images. This one, which is similar to the painting has been released on its own merit as a still life photography image.

August Still life with Cezanne and Matisse

There are distinctive elements of Paul Cezanne’s work that go far beyond his use of colour to represent form. He had a way of presenting different viewpoints in his compositions that was and is exciting. This is something that Henri Matisse continued to explore while allowing the paint to become colour fields of flat surfaces. At one point in the of the development of this work I had a choice. I could continue to build up the colour fields or I could continue to follow the light and movement within the still life. Matisse of course was arguing for letting paint be paint in its colour and simplicity. Cezanne was slowly working his way into the tension of form and structure of the still life using colour as his guide. I observed. I thanked the masters. Then I picked up my brush and continued to paint the light and movement between the forms until the painting came to rest.

Pear Trees in Winter First Light – small oil painting

A painting expressing the connections between the various elements and finding the space surrounding and holding the visual tension between land, sea and sky. The pear trees seem to reach around in the morning light reminding us that nothing is separate and all is dependent on seen and unseen influences.

This 10 x 8 inch oil on canvas is now in a private collection.

This painting is included with two others in my blog post  “Doing a Henri Matisse in three new paintings” at:

http://creativepotager.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/doing-a-henri-matisse-in-three-new-paintings

Of the three, it is by far the one most akin to my usual painting style where paintbrush and palette knife work interchangeably to meet my needs.
