Pear Trees in Winter First Light – small oil painting

A painting expressing the connections between the various elements and finding the space surrounding and holding the visual tension between land, sea and sky. The pear trees seem to reach around in the morning light reminding us that nothing is separate and all is dependent on seen and unseen influences.

This 10 x 8 inch oil on canvas is now in a private collection.

This painting is included with two others in my blog post  “Doing a Henri Matisse in three new paintings” at:

http://creativepotager.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/doing-a-henri-matisse-in-three-new-paintings

Of the three, it is by far the one most akin to my usual painting style where paintbrush and palette knife work interchangeably to meet my needs.

Winter Afternoon West Coast Ferry Home oil painting

The winds were high that day. When we boarded the ferry for home the captain requested that we make sure the emergency brake was set on our vehicle and to then remain seated as much as possible for the voyage home. It was indeed a little rough as we cross the waters between Swartz Bay and Pender Island. Then the sea settled. But the sky still rolled as the sun pushed its way through just before setting over the far islands in the inside passage. The light was glorious.

Evening Thunderclouds over the Strait of Georgia – dramatic seascape sky painting

Thunderclouds caught in the setting sun make miniatures out the majestic coastal range on the far side of the Straight of Georgia. The very swiftness of their movement in the fading light offers us a skyward dance across the sky which we are all but bewitched into accepting. How does a painter capture this swelling of spirit and visceral sense of tingling presence? The answer may seem obvious – with a brush of course. But is it really that simple? To take a moment like this and stand before a blank canvas with a few oil pigments squeezed from their tubes and then translate such an experience? No it is difficult. In fact it took me two years to get up the nerve to try. Yet, with several photographic references from the experience it was easy to be standing on the shore at Georgina Point looking up at the sky and to be swept away by these cloud partners as my brush recorded each pass we made across the sky.

Late December West Coast Sunrise small oil painting

The deep mauve and purple with yellow, pink and orange over the dark water of a winter sunrise brings such joy and conviction to the day. The coolness of the west coast winter air and soft slap of the waves from the sea greetings tells us we are alive. Yes, so very much alive. The quick brush strokes of a small oil painting study capture the experience. It is another painting for squared to the sea series which I started over a year ago.

Evening and the Arbutus Tree – a large west coast oil painting

The sun is going down fast in the late afternoon of November out on Georgina Point, Mayne Island . I marvel at the orange glow and the hues of the heavy mist in the distance of our west coast landscape. I knew then that this most-loved tree was once again going to grace one of my canvases – a large one this time. There is the coolness of a winter sea with soft waves barely evident on the shore. There is a quiet and a peace that often accompanies the end of a day. There is a sense of being alive without separation between land, sea and sky. It is often such with the Canadian landscape but so hard to portray in away that someone who has never been, never stood where I am standing will know what it is I speak about. Yet, this tree knows and seems to be willing to assist me in my interpretation.

From its clinging roots dug into the sandstone bank…

As a Canadian Landscape painter I am often challenged to find my way visually and spiritually into and through my physical environment. I have not yet told or even succinctly understood all that happened on this canvas. All I know is something in me has changed during the process. I have discovered an aspect of my being that I did not know existed before.

I write more about the process and influences behind this painting over on my Creative Potager blog at http://creativepotager.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/unraveling-the-artistic-influences-and-intentions-behind-the-painting-evening-and-the-arbutus-tree

Reef Bay Morning Experienced – west coast seascape oil painting

I remember the sea, and the soft rush of water as it comes ashore. I remember the heaviness of the rocks and the salty dampness of winter seaweed. I feel the coolness of the air and the cry of the gulls.

REEF BAY MORNING EXPERIENCED  is an 14 x 18 inch alla prima or wet-on-wet seascape painting with the quiet strength that is part of any peaceful west coast day.

Reef Bay morning experienced 11 x 14 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 2012_12_20 016

A Sunday seems like a perfect release day for this new work that was completed late in 2012 and right in the heart of the gray that prevails during the short wet winter days. Yet is somehow a hopeful painting, one that fills me with resilience and inner strength against mounting melancholy. This is the kind of creative environment that feeds my creative muse and stills self-doubt with swift observation and quick sure brushstrokes.

More about the inspiration and process behind the rendering of this painting is available at Reef Bay Mayne Island observation to painted experience .
