Summer Release of an Eclectic Group of Seven Oil Paintings

Summer sun is having a long heated love affair with the southwest coast of Canada this year. It makes for some cautious lazy days as one is vigilant about fire hazards and water conservation. But the studio is cool right up until late afternoon. New work is completed and a few older pieces revisited. Decisions are made and gradually a body of new paintings is ready for release. They are varied and without a common link other than the artist’s brush marks. If connections between works is what you seek, come on back next week when the California paintings from my travels earlier in the year will be released. For now, lets skip and dance through a studio rendering of random pieces…..

November light lingers as it crosses the full depth of the room. Paintings are in temporary positions. Most paintings in the studio are accustomed to these circumstances as they appear and disappear out into the world. This painting thought it might be kept. Seven months it remained hopeful.

In addition two Terrill Welch landscape paintings have been accepted in the 29th Sooke Fine Arts Show July 24 to August 3, 2015. This is the largest juried event in the region, representing Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands artists. The competition is fierce and jury selection rigorous. I am honour to be included. There are 375 pieces selected and the event attracts more than 8000 visitors, tourists and art patrons throughout its 11-day run. I am thrilled to have these two works represented this year and I’m looking forward to the show. If you are in the neighbourhood during this time, I highly recommend going to this premiere event. There will be some outstanding work to satisfy the artistic appreciation in everyone. Just let me know if you need more of the details. Two Canadian Landscape Paintings rendered as home

When does a landscape become more like home than nearby dwellings and their inhabitants? This is a question the Canadian artist Terrill Welch often asks herself when she is considering the subjects for landscape paintings. Her conclusion is that the landscape and the seasons it responds to helps organize daily rural life. This is when “home” is expressed most clearly by the land, water and sky. Two new landscape paintings rendered as Terrill’s markings of home are being released today.

The first is inspired from where the artist lives now on Mayne Island in southwestern British Columbia.

There is a place called Mount Parke on Mayne Island that has a trail that meanders steeply up to above the cliffs behind her house and runs along the ridge. Sometimes if there is low fog it is possible to climb up on the ridge into the sun. It is like some special magic has happened.

The second painting is inspired from Terrill’s childhood and living along the Stuart River in north-central British Columbia.

Snow is not far off and a day of kicking leaves means there is a good stockpile of winter wood. The larder is full and the winter vegetables put down. With the last heat of the sun on our back and cool northern breeze on our face, kicking leaves is a luxury between the tasks that are necessary to survive another winter.

First Brush with Europe painting – Morning by Pont d’ Avignon

There have been no posts here for a while as the artist was traveling and painting sketches in Europe from the beginning of April until the end of June. However, I am back in the studio and more new work shall become available again. Here is the first…

The Pont d’ Avignon or Pont Saint-Bénézet once had 22 arches. The bridge was eventually abandon as the arches took too much upkeep due to being damaged when the Rhone river would flood. The four remaining arches are believed to have been built around 1345. The bridge was the inspiration for the song Sur le pont d’Avignon. The subject for this work began with a plein air sketch while I was standing on the riverbank on an early morning in June of 2014 in Avignon France.

The Edge and At The Beach Another Time – Canadian landscape paintings

Two new Canadian landscape paintings are ready to release from my studio.

THE EDGE  is a brand new 48 x 24 inch rendering of a sandstone bluff battered by the wind and sea but also hosts a familiar arbutus tree on its top most tip. It is a rare large long-lean painting to out of my studio.  THE EDGE is about strength, beauty and opportunity.

As well, more  about the work-in-progress is posted on today’s Creative Potager blog “Working on THE EDGE can offer some interesting possibilities.”

AT THE BEACH ANOTHER TIME is a 12 x 12 inch rework of an older painting. I seldom do this as I much prefer to start with a blank canvas but sometimes a painting will continue to call me – it is like it was never finished…

Fog Inside Passage winter west coast Canadian landscape painting

Winter fog in the southern gulf islands is often dense and close to the sea. Islands appear and disappear as the ferries take passengers through the inside passage. The mysterious landscape has a beauty that is hard to know unless one lives with it for the long winter months of off-season quiet. This 12 x 24 inch oil on canvas is my rendering of this tactile west coast Canadian landscape experience.
