Winter Sun II west coast Canada Landscape Painting

Crisp air is softened in the early light. Another day begins as the sea hums a mellow tune that is being rehearsed in the west coast of Canada morning sky.

The Edge and At The Beach Another Time – Canadian landscape paintings

Two new Canadian landscape paintings are ready to release from my studio.

THE EDGE  is a brand new 48 x 24 inch rendering of a sandstone bluff battered by the wind and sea but also hosts a familiar arbutus tree on its top most tip. It is a rare large long-lean painting to out of my studio.  THE EDGE is about strength, beauty and opportunity.

(Updated December 13, 2015 following a reworking of this painting)

Detailed view and purchase information is available HERE.

As well, more  about the work-in-progress is posted on today’s Creative Potager blog “Working on THE EDGE can offer some interesting possibilities.”

AT THE BEACH ANOTHER TIME is a 12 x 12 inch rework of an older painting. I seldom do this as I much prefer to start with a blank canvas but sometimes a painting will continue to call me – it is like it was never finished…

Sister oil paintings of Tulips on the Springwater Deck Mayne Island

Two new bright 20 x 16 oil on canvas sister paintings of the luscious tulips on the Springwater Deck are ready for your perusal.

The first is a plein air painting which had a few minor edits back in the studio to bring it to completion.

TULIPS SPRINGWATER DECK MAYNE ISLAND

Tulips Springwater Deck Mayne Island 20 x 16 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 3013_04_25 166

This Painting is now SOLD and is going to a private collector in British Columbia Canada.

There is more about the plein air work-in-progress including a short video on my Creative Potager blog post “Tulips on the deck of the Springwater lodge en plein air” Though a fine representation of the subject and a painting I am happy with I had this deep desire to experiment further with this great subject.

The second is a studio work of the same subject on the same size canvas. My intention with the second painting was to explore the relationships between the various elements of the scene. I wanted to capture the shifting temporariness of the moment. I wanted to feel the sun, the breeze and the smells of the sea as we view the tulips on the large pot on the deck.

TULIPS SPRINGWATER DECK II

This Painting is now SOLD and is going to a private collector in Saskatchewan Canada.

Now let’s have a look at them side-by-side because I am afraid these sister paintings will always be compared. It is just a human trait we have to want to compare things that are similar.

sister paintings Tulips Springwater Deck by Terrill Welch 2013_05_04 065

Though obviously sisters, each painting has its own personality and character. In early comments from viewers there seems to be not much of a preference for one over the other.Though there are some who definitely like one more than the other. As the painter I am ambivalent about a preference as each means something to me and neither is perfect but both are alive.

What about you? Do you have a preference for one painting over the other? If so which one and what is it that has it being your favourite?

Oil landscape paintings – three new releases and three to ship

The studio continues to be a busy place this spring with the ninth Canadian landscape oil painting this year purchased by a collector yesterday. But let’s start with the three new paintings being released this morning before I share with you the other three I must get packaged for shipping next week.

Holding the tension between the west coast land, sea and sky….

Spring at the Springwater Lodge Mayne Island – 11 x 14 inch oil on canvas plein air

Spring at the Springwater Lodge Mayne Island 11 x 14 inch oil on canvas plein air by Terrill Welch 2013_04_14 154

I like the idea of transcribing earlier photography and memory notes of a moment with paint. It is never exactly accurate but maybe possibly enough of a translation to be understood. This is of course Reef Bay on Mayne Island with its sandstone beach and winter seaweed resting on the stones. But the details are not as important to me as my desire to render the feeling of timelessness I experience in this particular place. This is what I am after. The sensation of being part of the moment rather than an observer.

Secured by its new owner about mid painting process and is on its way to California, U.S.A…..

Finally, we have a wee painting that is going to a family member in Vancouver B.C., Canada. Each of our eight children has been gifted a painting for one of their birthdays. I am not able to do everyone in the same year so the painting gifts are staggered over a few years. The person receiving the gift may choose any painting, regardless of size or price, that is available in my collection. After much thought and deliberation, this is the painting of choice for this individual.

Active Pass Breaking Cloud Cover – a morning shadow photograph

The morning’s broken light created shadow play across the landscape and sea. So often in landscape photograph, shadows are edited out so that we can have a better view of the whole scene. It is a mistake I think to  give the viewer a world without the benefits of shadows.  The way the earth and clouds gallop across our landscape is a specific relationship. Time of day, the time of year and even geographic information is hidden in these shadows.

Here in my latest photograph available at RedBubble I give shadows a deep bow of gratitude.

We know it is early spring in the Gulf Islands as we gaze into Active Pass from Mayne Island. We know from the slight haze that there is brush from winter storms being burned on various properties in the near vicinity. We might guess it is unsettled weather flirting with us in the morning light.  Shadows are all part of this knowing, this experiencing of the landscape. We might think such understanding is no longer relevant or important. After all, who is going to plant their early onions using this information? Who will wants to know that it must be just about time for the Chocolate Lilies to bloom? Well, me of course.

Winter Morning By The Sea – a small seascape painting

The day starts with soft hints of colour through heavy cloud and mist. Yet, the wonder of a new beginning, a new start, is still powerful and satisfying in its own natural abstract way. WINTER MORNING BY THE SEA is a small 8 x 10 inch oil on canvas window of hope and possibility for any kind of day.

Sliced with a Tear – a large autumn Canadian landscape painting

There is something about autumn by the sea with the gray melancholy wrapped in fall colours. This particular day is one of those slow-baked, melancholy west coast Sundays, so moist and tender you can slice it with a tear.

Days pass with my dreams waking me up early to paint for many of my waking hours. I am consumed with the transitions between light and shadow and form.

The details show the looseness of easy strokes with two and one inch brushes.

There is the leaves against the sky on the far top right. Nothing but swathes of golden colour added to the sky with a hint of branches to hold them in place. Then there is the clatter of colour near one of the main tree trunks a the top near the left side of the painting, colours that must roll over and under each other bringing the leaves forward in the painting towards the viewer.

Sliced with a Tear detail 1 by Terrill Welch 2013_01_25 136

But it is the whole of this 36 x 60 inch (or 3 feet by 5 feet) oil on canvas that tells the story of this particular fall day.

Sliced with a Tear 36 x 60 inch oil on canvas by Terrill Welch 2013_01_25 115

There is more about the background and painting process for this work in the Creative Potager blog post at “ SLICED WITH A TEAR autumn oil painting in process by Terrill Welch.”

This painting is not going to be released for sale anytime soon as I am keeping it in my Artist’s collection for the time being.

Pear Trees in Winter First Light – small oil painting

A painting expressing the connections between the various elements and finding the space surrounding and holding the visual tension between land, sea and sky. The pear trees seem to reach around in the morning light reminding us that nothing is separate and all is dependent on seen and unseen influences.

Pear Trees in winter first light 10 x 8 inch oil o canvas by Terrill Welch 2013_01_25 064

This 10 x 8 inch oil on canvas is now in a private collection.

This painting is included with two others in my blog post  “Doing a Henri Matisse in three new paintings” at:

http://creativepotager.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/doing-a-henri-matisse-in-three-new-paintings

Of the three, it is by far the one most akin to my usual painting style where paintbrush and palette knife work interchangeably to meet my needs.
